Question: The four children in the Johnson family earned extra money by having a yard sale. They earned $60 and decided to share the money in the following way: The oldest child took 1/4 of the money, the second oldest took 1/3 of what was left, the next oldest took half of the remaining money, and the rest was given to the youngest How much money did each child receive?
Answer: Each received $15
Note: The first child: 1/4 of 60 = 15, 60 – 15 = 45. The second child: 1/3 of 45 = 15, 45 – 15 = 30. The third child: 1/2 of 30 = 15, 30 – 15 = 15. The youngest child receives 15.
Algebra and Up
Question: Cathy is making a rug for her living room, by attaching a semi-circular rug to the edge of a square rug. The square rug has a side length of 4 feet. If the straight edge of the semi-circular rug fits perfectly against the edge of the square rung, what is the the total area of the rug that Cathy is making for the living room?
Answer: 16 + 2pi square feet or approximately 16 + (2 * 3.4159) = 16 + 6.8318 or approximately 22.8318 square feet
