Sep 1, 2015 | Apex

Each month we are going to spotlight one of our A+ instructors! Our staff members come from different backgrounds and have a variety of views on math, education, and life.

Our September instructor spotlight is our owner, Dr. Wade Yarbrough!

What did you do before Mathnasium?

"I spent the prior 35 years designing, installing, and supporting healthcare information systems. During that time I worked for Andersen Consulting (now Accenture), University of Pittsburgh Health System, Cerner Corporation, and Allscripts."

Where did you attend college and what was your major?
Mississippi State University, BA in Psychology
West Virginia University, MA in Behavior Analysis
West Virginia University, PhD in Behavior Analysis

What was your biggest academic achievement?
"Graduating from Mississippi State with a 3.96/4.00 "

What was your biggest academic challenge?
"Languages!! I took two years of Latin in high school and two years of Greek in college. The Latin was required and Greek was just a bad choice. The worst grades in my academic career. Chemistry was a close second."

What is your favorite subject? (Other than math!)
"You thought I was going to say Psychology. But I had a minor in Computer Science and I would have to say that was my favorite subject. That's a big reason why I ended up installing information systems rather than teaching psychology."

What is your favorite thing about working at Mathnasium?
"I'm going to cheat and give two answers. One is working with Hannah and the instructors. It's a joy to work with people who are dedicated to their jobs and enjoy their work. It's an overused phrase but the Mathnasium team is truly a family. The second is watching the students as they advance. It is very rewarding to see thme improve their math abilities. However, it is even more rewarding to watch their confidence improve as they mature as students and individuals."

What's your favorite color?
"Blue"

What is your dream job?
"Running a math learning center with a great staff and fantastic kids. Oh wait...I already have that job!!"

What are some of your favorite hobbies and pastimes?
"My wife, Michelle, and I own a small horse farm. I spend most of my non-work time doing chores on the farm. It is a great way to relax and get some great exercise at the same time. I also enjoy playing the banjo and guitar."

What are your favorite words of wisdom?
"Most people are prisoners, thinking only about the future or living in the past. They are not in the present, and the present is where everything begins." (Carlos Santana)

"If you try to fail, and succeed, which have you done?" (George Carlin)
