Q: How do you know what kind of math students in your center/re need to be taught?
A: The purpose of our assessment is to identify a student's strengths and weaknesses in mathematics. This allows us to create a personalized learning plan tailored to the student's needs. The assessment covers a wide variety of topics as each student is unique in their exact math readiness:
Basic Arithmetic: Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Number Sense: Understanding numbers, place value, and number operations.
Algebra: Variables, equations, and algebraic expressions.
Geometry: Shapes, space, and measurement.
Data Analysis: Understanding charts, graphs, and data interpretation.
Problem-Solving Skills: Application of mathematical concepts to solve problems.
Q: Why do students need to take tests?
A: After the assessment, our Center Director reviews the results with the student and their parents, outlining the areas where the student excels and where they need improvement. Based on this, they recommend a customized learning program designed to address specific learning gaps and reinforce the student's understanding of mathematical concepts. For example, Adam, in the spring of his 7th grade year, did not understand many concepts introduced in 2nd and 3rd grade. After taking him through all his identified gap areas, he was prepared for high school math and went into engineering course in college. He would have never understood high scool math if we skipped elementary math skills.
Q: Can Mathnasium help students prepare for their tests in math class?
A: Yes! Mathnasium can help students prepare for their math class tests. We tailor to meet individual learning needs, which includes test preparation. Our Core is Conceptual Understanding: Mathnasium emphasizes building a strong foundation in mathematical concepts, which can help students understand the material more deeply and improve their problem-solving skills.
We also offer targeted review, practice & reinforcement. Our flexible scheduling allows students to get the help they need in the days leading up to a test. Josh just told us he got his highest score ever in math!
Q: What about College Placement Tests?
A: The math portion of the ACT includes pre-algebra, elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, coordinate geometry, plane geometry, and trigonometry. All Mathnasium curriculum builds skills on these topics. We start by making sure a student remembers how to do the "easy" questions. Then we keep building. Our ACT workout book is a constant assessment to analyze what concepts need more instruction and practice. It is very successful when given the appropriate time to learn.
