Phylecia Jones: How Can We Encourage Girls to Keep Pursuing Math?

Phylecia Jones talks about the importance of supporting girls in their math education.  We want to encourage them in their studies to prevent them from being discouraged by math and feel like they will not be able to succeed at it.  We should support them and tell them they ARE good at math! Supporting their ideas will go a long way.

Eddie Woo: How Can Math Help Us Understand the Complexity of the Universe?

Eddie Woo sees mathematics as a practical world, not some dark mysterious place of mindless computation.  He says that everyone has a mathematical sense that can be fostered with support. We all see patterns everyday in the world which can all be related back to mathematics.

Masha Gershman: What Can We Learn From the Russian Approach to Math Education?

Masha Gershman answers the question “How can we empower children to navigate the uncertainty of their lives?” She stresses the importance of developing young minds. We can empower children through math by challenging them to think abstractly.  We don’t want students to push away new problems that they’ve never seen before, but rather take a minute to think about how they can possibly approach this never-before-seen problem to them.
