Q: Why did you choose to own a Mathnasium center? A: I chose to own the Mathnasium here in Converse, because I wanted to do what I could not do in my classroom. I wanted to be able to figure out exactly where a student's foundational skills were weak or missing and build those skills up so that the student would understand the math. Pacing was also important, I wanted to go as fast or slow as the student needed.
Q: What do you like about the city your Mathnasium center is located in? A: There is so much to love about the city of Converse. It has a great mayor and a tremendous Economic Development Corporation. The EDC has really helped me transition from a teacher to business owner. They have been integral to my success. The people here are fabulous too! I get to interact daily with people who value education and love others well.
Q: Can you think of any way that your center has positively impacted the community that it’s located in? A: We worked with the local community to build a full scale working sundial in Anton Schumann Park. It is one of only three located in the state of Texas. Now you just need a sunny day to tell the time in the park.
Q: Did you like math when you were in grade school? A: I was not a fan of math in grade school. Math has always been difficult for me. Even through college I struggled with math. It became really evident what I was lacking when I became a teacher and had to teach others math.
Q: What do you think you would have liked most about Mathnasium if you had attended when you were in grade school? A: I would have loved knowing that I wasn't dumb. I just needed good instruction placed in front of me.
Q: One last question, what’s something fun you enjoy doing in Converse? A: There are a lot of parks and an amazing library here in Converse. My perfect day would be visiting Anton Schumann Park for a walk through the trails and then heading to the Converse library to pick up a good book.
