6 Tips For Staying Involved in Your Child’s Education...

Dec 30, 2020 | Crescent Springs

As your child gets older, it can be difficult to remain involved in their education. While it is easy to assume that they do not need any help unless they ask for assistance, it is important that you take the time to get involved. Your child’s high school grades can affect their future. As they age, they experience more things and lose sight of their future. Knowing how to effectively stay involved will make a monumental difference in your child’s success and their entire high school experience. The following are 6 tips that will help you stay involved in your child's education...

Communicate With Your Child

Talking to your child can be challenging at this age especially when it comes to school. However, if you don’t have an open line of communication, you might never know what is going on in their lives. Developing a solid relationship with your teenager means offering an ear. This reminds them that you love and care for them. Not only that but it increases your chances that they will come to you with their victories and even when life defeats them. It might be difficult to remain calm but if your child comes to you with a problem, show them how to handle the situation appropriately.

Read Newsletter and Review Homework

Your child might not willingly share what is going on at school, so you may have to take upon yourself to investigate. Go through their folders and binders, ask to review their homework when it is completed. Read newsletter and flyers when they are sent home. You can also look on your school’s website for the latest information.

Stay Active in the PTA/PTO

All schools have an organization referred to as the PTA (Parent Teacher Association) or PTO (Parent Teacher Organization. These programs allow you to talk with your parents teacher and plan ideas while gathering. When you are apart of your school’s PTA group, you become more involved in fundraising, school activities, and their education. Not only will your child know that you care but it also shows the school and your child's teachers that you care and want to be involved.

Stay In Contact With Teachers and Other Staff

Even when your child does not have a problem and you are not in the middle of a parent-teacher conference, talk to their teacher. Also, communicate with other school staff members as this helps you and your child build strong relationships within the school. Just one more way that you are able to show your child you are there for them.

Get To Know Your Child's Friends and Their Families

The friends your child associates with will have a huge impact on their life-- whether that is for the good or bad is to be determined. Get to know these friends by having them over at your house. When you are around their parents, take the time to talk to them so that you can get a better understanding of where your child’s friends come from.

Make Sure Your Child Knows That You Are Happy To Help

As your child gets older, it can be easy to become disconnected. You both have busy schedules and a lot on your plate. Not to mention, your child is at that age where they would rather be left alone. Regardless, take the time to offer them assistance. If your child expresses that they are struggling with math and you are unsure if you can help them, consider hiring an online tutor. At Mathasium, we have many online tutors ready to help your child better understand their math assignment.
