Statistics for Sixth Graders | Histograms and Run Charts … marbles are the key

May 12, 2015 | East Sparks

Aswith all things math, I’ve always had an easier time understanding the concepts by understanding the graphs.  Us visual learners always find comfort in seeing things in pictures then make connections between how the numbers relate to each other.

Two graphs that are foundations of statistics are the run chart – for example, graphing our weight each day for 30 days; and the histogram (closely related to the “bell curve”).

So how do these two relate?  I think about the data points on the run chart as marbles.  When we rotate the run chart counter clockwise, the marbles roll down and stack on top of each other.  That gives us the histogram.

Remember, all of the data points and graphs will relate to each other in some way.  We just have to think about how and then use the graphs to help us picture it all.
