Mathnasium is a math learning center and supplemental education provider, teaching math in way that makes sense to K-12 students. Mathnasium offers the finest mathematics instruction worldwide. It utilizes a time-tested approach that provides initial and ongoing assessments, customized learning plans, personalized instruction, and guided practice to build each student’s math understanding and skills. As students gain a greater understanding of math, their excitement toward the subject grows. Excitement leads to passion, and passion leads to growth.

Although there are many after school math programs and tutoring services offered in the Tri-City area (Fremont, Newark, Union City), the Mathnasium Method is a unique and premier teaching method. It is the mission of Mathnasium to make math make sense for every child. Mathnasium’s Fremont Center is owned and operated by Eric Pan, a long -time resident of Fremont and graduate of Mission San Jose High School. In full support of Mathnasium’s mission and guided by his faith and engineering education from Caltech and MIT, he wants to co-invest with parents to help and support many children in the community learning math. Understanding leads to accomplishment. Accomplishment leads to passion and mastery. Those who master math can solve critical problems and leverage important opportunities for making their future satisfying and rewarding.

More than 40 years ago, Larry Martinek, creator of the Mathnasium Method, was inspired to find a better way to teach math. As a teacher in public and private schools, as well as a father to a mathematically gifted son, Nic, Larry possessed a comprehensive view of math education. In his work with both stellar and struggling math programs, he identified a common theme in math instruction – a vast disconnect between students’ learning skills and the curriculum they were expected to master. Larry decided to find an approach that would provide students with the strong mathematical foundation they needed to succeed. The solution would be to identify students’ current skill levels and propel them forward by teaching them math in a way that made sense to them.

Larry assembled and developed a blend of methods and materials that had proven highly effective for students of all ages in his years as an educator. The Mathnasium Method was born. Instead of relying on memorization and repetition, Larry’s approach focused on helping children build deep mathematical under-standing through a combination of mental, visual, verbal, tactile, and written exercises. His classroom experience showed that teaching children conceptually worked much better than standard repetition and allowed students to develop Number Sense – a critical foundation for understanding math.

The first Mathnasium Learning Center was opened in 2002 in Los Angeles. Today, Mathnasium is a global franchise, with more than 575 locations worldwide. Because STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is now at the forefront of education policy and curriculum, math education will impact all areas of science and technology as well as business and government. The study of math enables a powerful, universal thought process that not only helps individuals to identify and analyze problems, but also provides them with the tools needed to find solutions and make sound decisions. Learning math effectively enhances brain and cognitive development in young children and adolescents — providing a quality educational experience will greatly impact the rest of their lives.
