How To Build Better Study Habits In 2021

Jan 27, 2021 | South Friendswood

A new year is a great time to focus on new goals and to establish new habits.

When it comes to studying math, we have compiled a list of 10 ways to develop stronger math study habits this year…

  1. Create a quiet study place. Find a spot that is just yours, away from noise, traffic, TV or siblings to distract you. Leave your cell phone and tablets in another room to stay focused while you study.
  1. Develop a study calendar. Create a calendar that outlines what you need to study. You could back this up from an exam week and create a one, two, three- or four-week study plan based on your schedule. You are most likely to follow through with your study sessions when you write it down. Study sessions are most effective in 20-30 minute increments. Our learning center can help you develop a study plan based on your needs and goals.
  1. Attend math class. This year is different with many students trying to manage learning in-person while others are learning math via Zoom. No matter your situation, attend math class. Stay engaged and ask questions.
  1. Prepare for your study sessions. Whether you are attending math tutoring sessions in our tutoring center, or you’re studying with a small group or solo at home, gather all study materials before you begin. This includes your books, calculator, sharpened pencils, schoolwork, tests, etc.
  1. Get help early in the semester. Schedule a time to meet with your teacher, visit a math lab or book a math tutoring session at our math learning center early in the semester. Don’t let your grades slip or your math comprehension struggle too far into the semester.
  1. Write down math vocabulary. For each math chapter, write down math vocabulary and make sure you understand each definition.
  1. Develop a good math note-taking system. Whether you’re on zoom or in person, take detailed notes during math class. Copy all information on the board or on PowerPoints. Practice solving the problems and make note cards with the steps you need to solve the math problems.
  1. Hire a math tutor to help with homework frustration. Math homework frustration can end up taking more time away from your family, extracurricular activities or other things you’d rather be doing. But ignoring it won’t help. Hire a math tutor from our learning center to help you work through your math homework, ensuring you understand each concept. Our specially trained math tutors know how to teach you/your child so they understand math in a personalized, individual setting. Let us help!
