Our students at Mathnasium of Friendswood come from all schools, ages and grades throughout the Independent School District. Some enroll temporarily to catch up or get help on a certain topics they are struggling with in their math class, while others enroll on a regular basis to get homework help, review concepts, get test prep help and stay ahead!
If you or your child has never worked with a math tutor before, if even if you have, there are a couple tips we recommend to fully prepare for your first tutoring session here at our learning center. Our specially trained math tutors are great at what they do, but it’s important to communicate with them clearly on what you need and expect so they can quickly get to the focus of math tutoring: helping you/your child with math!
-
Try to complete your homework at home first. Our math tutors provide homework help, but usually a session doesn’t allow enough time for math tutors to walk through each problem of the homework or assignment. And usually a student doesn’t need help with all of it! Chances are your child is not having problems with all of it and there are things they already know how to do. So, in order to help the math tutor spend more time helping you/your child on things they are struggling with, we encourage our students to try to complete what they can of their homework assignments at home, before meeting with their tutor.
-
Bring your notes from class. Bringing your work and notes from class can be helpful because it allows your tutor to see which methods your teacher is using to teach you the material. This way they can try an alternative method to help you understand the material better. The method your teacher is using may be a correct way of teaching, but just not make sense to you, so sometimes teaching using a different approach can be the key to understanding.
-
Write down your questions. As you complete your homework or work during class, write down or highlight your questions. This will help you remember exactly what is confusing so our math tutors can get right to it when you come in the center or log on virtually.
-
Be on time. Using your math tutoring time wisely is very important to us! If you’re logging on to Mathnasium @Home, sign in a couple minutes early to make sure you’re set up and ready to go. Feel free to come 5-10 minutes early to our center to be prepared to start on time with your tutor.
