The 3 Most Common Types of Math Students

Jun 2, 2021 | South Friendswood

Students that enroll at our learning center all enroll for different reasons. They have different struggles, needs, goals and more—just like the students in the classroom!

Can you imagine if every student learned at the same pace and understood all the material at the same rate? That would make every math teacher’s job twice as easy! But that’s just not the case.

Not every lesson meets the needs of every student, every day. Which is why a math tutor can be so beneficial!

Our math tutors help students stay on track, catch up and review math curriculum--and this summer is no exception.

Our summer math camps and tutoring sessions are often even more successful for students because there isn’t extra homework to complete or tests to prepare for. Our tutors can simply just focus on the curriculum a student needs help with.

So, what kind of student can benefit from math tutoring? Well typically, there are three types of math students. Each one has unique differences, but all can benefit from one-on-one math practice and tutoring.

Take a look…

Student #1: Missing foundational pieces. This student shows signs of struggling by being overwhelmed by homework and assignments and often they leave class feeling lost. They typically have low test scores and confidence. However, the solution is easy… our math tutors find and fill those holes and gaps in foundational curriculum to build a solid math base off of.

Student #2: Needs a different explanation. Not every student thinks or learns the same. So, typically a student who complains about their teacher and not understanding the material might simply need a different approach or explanation. This student often has lower test scores but is mistaken for struggling when they really just need a little more one-on-one attention. This is where our tutors watch, listen and observe to understand their learning style. Then, they adapt to it and teach in a way that the student will understand.

Student #3: The bored student. Sometimes a student who has already mastered something becomes bored and a little disruptive or disinterested during math class. They can even become lazy and dismissive with homework, but it’s not because they don’t understand it. These students need a new challenge! And our math tutors can help. No student is the same and at Mathnasium, our goal is always to help each child with the math curriculum they need, in a way that makes sense to them.
