Q: On your team bio it says you are pursuing a teaching credential, What are your plans after?
I originally attended UCI and graduated with a degree in Biomedical Engineering. I switched career paths and now plan to become an elementary school teacher. I am hoping to attend CSUF's teacher credential program in the fall and then will become a teacher! I haven't decided which grade I will teach yet, but I am hoping somewhere in the K-2 range.
Q: How long have you been working Mathnasium?
I have been working at Mathnasium almost a year! I started June of 2019 after finishing a year of serving with City Year, an Americorps Program serving low income students to provide mentors and tutors for them.
I love seeing those moments when children become confident in their math skills! When students show that they really understand a concept, you can see the pride on their faces and it makes me so happy.
Q: What is your favorite topic or course to teach? Any favorite math tricks to share with us?
I love teaching how far to 10, how far over ten, and Doubles plus or minus 1 since when I was young, that's how my brain worked and did addition. I was so excited when Mathnasium taught math the way I had always learned and processed it. My favorite math trick is that if you ever forget your nines times tables, you can hold up all ten fingers, put down the finger corresponding to the number you are multiplying by nine, and get your answer. It is easier to show in person than explain.
One of my favorite moments was when one student gave me a drawing inspired by the movie Tangled because she knew how much I love Disney. Another favorite moment was when a student bought a candy bar with his cards and gave it to me to say thank you for teaching him. These moments show me that we have an impact on these kids, and it goes beyond math.
