The long awaited summer break is already here! For most students, this is a good time to take a break from the studies, regroup and refresh for the next school year to begin. For some students, especially elementary aged students, some engagement with Math work is helpful or even essential over the 10-12 weeks of summer. This is very critical since children typically forget some of what they learned during the school year if they don’t engage in Math learning activities over the summer.

How would you know if your child needs Math work over the summer? Ask yourself how the previous school year has been for Math for them. I can think of 3 different scenarios that your child may fall in:

  1. Your child did very well with Math through the school year – In this case, they can do well by being engaged with the same and slightly advanced Math concepts over the summer, so that the concepts remain fresh in their mind and they start off strong with the new school year in fall. In addition, they can play different kinds of Math and logic games to keep their minds sharp and engaged. Also, if you would like to keep them challenged, you can start by getting them exposed to newer Math concepts for the next grade up!
  2. Your child did well in Math, but needs a review – In this case, they can do well with a review of the previous year’s Math concepts so that they do not forget what they learnt over the school year. Since every school year builds up on previous year’s knowledge, it is imperative to use this summer time to review and stay on top of their Math skills, so that when they start the new school year in fall, they do so with confidence of knowing and understanding what is going on.
  3. Your child struggled most of the school year – In this case, they do need intensive work over the summer and closely guided help with filling out their knowledge gaps and make their Math foundation strong before they begin the new school year that brings in more advanced concepts for them to work on. An in-depth assessment of their Math skills corresponding to the grade level would be helpful since that would provide a good starting point at which your child needs help and build a strong foundation in Math.
