Math Vocabulary

It can be difficult to learn math, simply because some of the vocabulary can be confusing. Taking away this mystery can go a long way in helping students understand different mathematical processes! Here is a list of math vocabulary you should know in order to get ahead:

  • 2D shapes: 2D shapes have only a length and width
  • 3D shapes: 3D shapes have a length, a width, and a height
  • Addend: Numbers added together to find the sum of an addition problem
  • Dividend: In division, the amount or number to be divided is called the dividend
  • Divisor: A divisor is a number that divides another number either completely or with a remainder
  • Expanded form: In the expanded form, we break up a number according to their place value and expand it to show the value of each digit; Example: 821 would be written as "800 + 20 + 1"
  • Greater than (>), Less than (<), and Equal to (=): Learning these signs can be tricky! An easy way to remember is that we read from left to right, and so that is the way we should "read" the signs; Example: 34 > 12 is the same as saying 34 is greater than 12.
  • Half of: Cutting something into two equal parts that are worth the same amount
  • Minuend: The number in a subtraction sentence from which we subtract another number
  • Place value: This determines the value of a number within a given number; Example: In the number 34,567, the value of the "4" is 4,000
  • Quotient: The result when you divide one number by another
  • Remainder: Remainder means something which is left over or remaining when doing a division problem
  • Standard form: To make it easy to read very large and small numbers, we write them in standard form.
  • Subtrahend: The number which we subtract from another number in a subtraction problem
