Tricks to Calculate Special Percents

Have you noticed your student struggling with finding percentages of whole numbers? Well look no further! Here are some tricks on how to calculate special percentages of numbers.

Let’s start with the most basic percentage: 100%. When you take 100% of a number, simply it means that you're taking all of that number. So, 100% of any number would be the number itself.

Now let’s look at 25%. In words, this means we would take a quarter of a number. For example, if we’re trying to find 25% of 16, we would simply find the quarter of 16. To do that, divide 16 by 4 which equals 4. So, 25% of 16 is 4.

Now let’s look at 33⅓%, Writing this in words, this means we would take a third of a number. For example, let’s find 33⅓% of 18. To do that, simply divide 18 by 3, which would equal 6. So, 33⅓% of 18 would be 6.

For our last example, let’s look at 50%. In words, 50% would mean finding half of a number. For example, if we’re finding 50% of 78, we would simply divide 78 by 2. Since 78 / 2 = 39, we say that 50% of 78 is 39.

For a more difficult example, let’s find 50% of 201. Since this is an odd number, finding half may be a little bit harder. However, if we split 201 into 200 + 1, this makes the problem easier. First find half of 200 then find half of 1 and add the two together to find half of 201. Since half of 200 is 100 and half of 1 is ½, half of 201 would be 100½. So, 50% of 201 is 100½.
