Algebra Readiness Starts Young!

Jul 6, 2015 | La Jolla

Algebra readiness is a buzz word that has become topical with the implementation of Common Core standards.  All math roads converge at algebra, so the fact that kindergarteners are prepping with algebra readiness isn't really a shocker.

Yesterday one of our math-hungry 3rd grade mathletes was excited to begin prime factorization of numbers. To do this successfully, he had to have a working knowledge of several other prerequisite skills:

  • Understanding what prime numbers are compared to composite ones
  • Apply divisibility rules to make his work easier (after all, who wants to divide by 2 a million times when starting with a higher number makes more sense!)
  • Know his multiplication facts
  • Understand basic exponent rules in case a prime factor needs to be squared or cubed or more

This is just one of the many examples of enrichment kids that we see in our center. Kids who not only understand the basics but are able to build and bundle them and then apply to a new situation.  It isn't easy for everyone. We have a good population of our Mathletes who struggle, but for those ready...holy smokes! Here we go!

Our brand new center in La Jolla Village is staffed with math experts who are here to support or challenge your student. Drop in and share your goals with us. Let us know how we can help!
