One of the theory is that math ability is genetic to some degree. But inspite of that, it seems that for high school math, inborn talent is just much less important than hard work, preparation, and self-confidence.
One of the question that comes to mind is the relevance of math in day to day life. Math skills are really important is getting good job these days. So, believing that one cannot learn math is very self-destructive. Math is the great mental bogeyman of an unconfident America.
One way to help Americans learn math is to copy the teaching style of Japanese, Chinese, Indians and Koreans. The book "Intelligence and How to Get It" focuses on improving math by hard work rather than genetic ability.
