Fun, Educational Math Games You Can Play with a Standard Deck of Cards...

Apr 8, 2021 | Mason

Making math fun is a great way to encourage your student. Whether you student implements these games in their tutoring or just to have a good time, you can play these math games with playing cards. NOTE: Face cards represent the following... Jacks are worth 11, Queens are worth 12, Kings are worth 13, and Aces are worth 1.

Biggest Number

In this game, you will begin by removing all the face cards and 10s from your deck. The dealer will shuffle the cards and turn over three cards at one time. The player that can mentally rearrange each digit and call out the highest number will win the hand. For older children, you can make it more challenging by dealing four or more cards at once. When the dealer finishes the deck, the player with the most cards will win the game.

Addition War

Deal the entire deck equally between all players. Each player should then place their hand face down on the table. Players should turn over two cards at a time and add the numbers mentally. Whoever has the highest sum will take every card that was played that round. Continue playing this way until all players run out of cards in the stack they had placed face down. The player that finishes with the most cards will win the game. (**You can play multiplication war the same way but instead of adding the numbers, players will multiply them. Subtraction war is another fun one; players will subtract one card from the other, the player with the lowest number will win each round.)

Number Factory

You will need to give each player a piece of paper and a pencil. Remove face cards and 10s and then deal 4 cards in the center of the table. Get ready to set your timer. Each player has five minutes to use subtraction, addition, division, multiplication (or all of them combined) to come up with as many math problems and solutions as you can. Each student will get one point per problem-- the one with the most problems wins.

Make Ten

Remove all of your 10s and face cards from your deck. Deal 16 cards face up in rows of 4, place them in the center of the table. While taking turns, each player will be given 10 seconds to pick up 2 cards that when added together, are equivalent to 10. Each time that a player takes a card, fill that spot in the empty deck. If any player is unable to answer within 10 seconds, it will be time. If you are able to answer within 20 seconds, it will be the next player’s turn. Whoever has the most cards at the end wins.

Addition/Subtraction Speed

Like with war, you will deal all of the cards out evenly amongst the players. Players should place their cards face down on the table. 1..2..3.. All players will flip over their top card. Whoever is able to add up the numbers and yell the correct answer first wins the hand. Continue playing until there are no more cards left in the deck. The player who has the most cards when the deck runs out is the winner. For more ways to make math fun with your children or tutoring help, contact mathnasium! We want to help your child succeed!
