Math Learning with Origami- The Math Fortune Teller!

Oct 3, 2018 | Miami Lakes

At our Math Learning Center this week:

We had a blast with this crafty activity this week. Based on Japanese origami, the Mathnasium Fortune Teller is a fun way for students to practice their math skills with a friend in order to discover their "math fortune".

We had 3 different options of origami printables available to cater to our different grade levels: one for Lower Elementary with basic Addition and Subtraction, one with Multiplication and Division problems and another with Order of Operations problems for the Upper-level students. The idea of the game is for students to first make the origami fortune teller by following a set of provided instructions and then partnering up with another student, one being the "Teller" and the other being the "Solver". The Solver must figure out how many times (based on the math problem) the Teller will pinch and pull the fortune teller in order to move on to the next problem. After repeating these steps a few times, they'll finally end in the final phase of the game: The Fortune Reading! Some of the math fortunes read: "You will earn an "A" on a test today!" or "The dog will eat your homework!"

Goes to show- Kids math learning doesn't have to be done on a flat sheet of paper- try it on some origami!  Check out some of these photos of our students trying it out at our learning center after their math learning sessions.
