Parent Teacher Conferences: What Can I Expect?

Nov 13, 2020 | Palmetto Bay

Do you have a parent teacher conference with your child’s math teacher coming up?

This is a chance to see how the school year is going for your child so far whether they are off to a strong start or need a bit more support. Because math builds on itself, a private visit with your child’s teacher is the best way to ensure that improvement begins earlier in the year rather than waiting until your child is even farther behind in the Spring.

These conversations typically bring more clarity than the feedback your child might provide. During parent teacher conferences, student work samples are also available so you can monitor progress from home.

Tips for getting the most out of your conference:

Before the meeting

  • Talk to your child about how they feel they are currently performing in class with regards to participation, confidence, and understanding
  • Make a list of topics with your child that you would like clarification on so you can help support their learning
  • Note changes in your child’s work habits or attitudes to share with the teacher - are they avoiding certain concepts, is there a lack of perseverance in solving problems, are they not being challenged, are they confused or frustrated?

During the conference

  • Ask to see your child’s work samples
  • Ask to see examples of problem solutions so that you can help support your child’s learning
  • Remember that both you and the teacher are invested in your child’s success; ask for tips to foster strong communication between you and the teacher
  • Thank the teacher! They work very hard to update all their students’ families on their progress!

After the conference

  • It’s important to talk to your child about what you and the teacher discussed - begin by sharing highlights and positive feedback from class so far this year
  • Find a time to review with your child what was discussed during the parent teacher conference so any changes can be implemented immediately
  • Inform your child of any changes that may be coming to help them be more successful in the classroom - new seating, additional enrichment for extra challenge, before or after school support
  • Continue communicating with the teacher to make sure the plan is in motion, assess progress, and update the plan as needed

We would love to hear any feedback their math teacher shares! We are always happy to support your child’s classwork during their Mathnasium session. Provide us with a class syllabus, sample classwork, or other materials from the teacher and we can help your child prepare for upcoming lessons. Your child’s  teacher is also more than welcome to contact us directly at [email protected].

If your child isn't currently enrolled at Mathnasium and you are in need of math enrichment, visit our Palmetto Bay / Pinecrest Center! Or Schedule an Assessment to see what areas we can strengthen to help them feel confident and get ahead in math.
