Do The CMAS Results Leave You More Discouraged and Confused Than Ever

Dec 9, 2016 | Parker

You probably recently received the results of your children’s CMAS from the 2015-2016 school year. The Colorado Measures of Academic Success, or CMAS, is a standardized test children take based on Common Core Standards. You may have also heard of the Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers or PARCC tests. The CMAS is simply the Colorado version of PARCC.  Children take the math portion every year in grades 3-9.

Parents Do Not Receive Helpful Information from the CMAS Results
The results provide a score of how your child is progressing in the math standards for their grade level. The scores range from 650 to 850. Depending on the score, the child gets categorized as one of these five levels of math achievement:
1.     Did Not Yet Meet Expectations
2.     Partially Met Expectations
3.     Approached Expectations
4.     Met Expectations
5.     Exceeded Expectations

It also gives a percentile ranking of how your child compares to their peers. It does not tell you what skills your child is missing, or give any suggestions on how parents can help. Learning your child is in category 1, 2, or even 3, isn’t fun. Not getting specific information about how to support your child’s math education makes many parents feel helpless. Nothing feels worse to a parent than watching a child suffer and not knowing how to help. Even parents with kids in the levels 4 and 5 want more answers. They want to know how to keep their children engaged and interested in math.
