Word Problem Wednesday: A Day at the Arcade

Dec 6, 2017 | Pleasanton

Calling all Mathletes! This week’s word problem challenge is all about fun and games! We’re not playing around, it’s time to put your math skills to good use to solve the challenge below and help Cody figure out how to spend his money at the arcade.

Challenge: Cody has 20 game tokens to spend at the arcade. He spends $2.40 to get 12 more. How much did Cody’s game tokens cost altogether?

We know you’ve got this, math fans! When you’re ready, check your solution against ours.

Solution: Since Cody spends $2.40 to buy 12 tokens, each token costs $2.40 ÷ 12 = $0.20. Cody has 20 + 12 = 32 tokens altogether, so his game tokens cost $0.20 × 32 = $6.40.
