FAQ - Is Mathnasium a Good Fit

Aug 18, 2019 | Sharyland

Does Mathnasium really work?

Yes! We have the data to share with you about our center's performance and success. Grades increase, confidence skyrockets, standardized test performance improves and much more! Take a moment to read what your neighbors have to say about us. During your consultation, we will also share our internal Georgetown center results that have been collected since 2017. We know you'll be impressed with the difference shown across all learning levels!

My child already excels in math.  Is Mathnasium really necessary?

Absolutely! This is the perfect place for your future engineer, health professional, and computer programmer to find other students who LOVE math. The tribe is waiting, and the energy with these high performing kids is incredible. In fact, we have a Talent Development program to join.  Since Mathnasium is customized to the needs of each individual student, we can help advanced students stay engaged and stimulated by introducing them to more challenging math topics than they see in school. We have a large percentage of students in Talented and Gifted (TAG) programs, and parents look to our program for math acceleration opportunities if their children are advanced in math, but did not qualify for TAG. These students have some of our highest attendance and it is also common for them to advance their skills 2+ grade levels ahead. They absolutely love MATH!

Do you provide homework help?

This is one of our most common requests from parents because they can't help at home. The math methods have changed significantly since we were in school, and our kids become frustrated when we try to show them our "old" ways. At our Georgetown center, we work with students from both public and private schools. We can help with school homework at the center, so you can enjoy your evenings and stop fighting over math. We can also help with test reviews, STAAR, and other standardized testing prep.

My child started to struggle with math last year, and it seems to be getting worse, can you help?

One of the hardest things to hear in a consultation is "Joey started having trouble in math in third grade, but we kept hoping he would improve. Now he's in 6th grade and failing."

What happens next?  The class moves on! Here come percentages, decimals, mixed numbers, exponents, ratios, x=?, divisibility rules, algebra, geometry, equations. It never slows down for Joey to catch up! He feels overwhelmed, perhaps embarrassed to ask for help in front of his classmates, and begins to think "I'm just not good in math!". Joey's loss of confidence may even extend into other subjects, which also begin to suffer.

Have you been fighting with Joey at home over homework? With many kids, it is easier for them to fight you and not do the work than to put the effort into it only to see failure again. After a while, it just doesn't seem worth the effort for them.

How can we turn things around? Parents, please take the early signs of math struggles seriously! The sooner you take action, the easier it is to catch up and get back on track. Students don't fall behind overnight, and the catch up doesn't happen quickly because the missing bricks in the math foundation must be learned. In some cases, it can take years. Meanwhile, Joey is lost, frustrated, and has no confidence left in math. Imagine watching a foreign movie without subtitles. It can be confusing and frustrating because you don't understand the language!  If your child is missing key math skills, this is exactly how they feel in math class! Schools have a large volume of math material to introduce in a school year, and mastery cannot always happen for many learners.  As a result, we see too many kids fall behind in math. Math and science are two subjects that really require a significant amount of extra practice beyond the classroom to master, and our programs offer exactly that - time and practice opportunity from our expert A+ math team. We can go back in time to catch up those building blocks, and move at the student pace. Don't delay any longer, hoping for the best. Take action now, and invest in Joey's future of understanding math and regaining his confidence!

Will confidence and grades improve?

As Jenna gains independence and mastery of math skills, watch her confidence soar! Our favorite words at the center are "that's so easy" and "I knew how to do that at school!" Not only will Jenna have the confidence and the skills to attack it, but she'll start bringing home better grades from school. How do we know this? Because we have seen it over and over again with hundreds of our students!

How are you teaching at the center?

Another great question! Our instructors are not just average math tutors. We have bright, engaging, inspiring math experts that work with your child individually on the customized plan by applying our Mathnasium Method. They teach new concepts, assign the right amount of practice opportunities, analyze the learning, answer questions, and provide direct feedback on completed work. Our goal is for every student to gain independence and mastery in all work. This enables your child to become a "confident, independent learner."

Do you offer private tutoring?

Yes, for Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. This is typically best for A or B students, who will benefit from once a week or occasional support for more challenging topics. Students in these subjects needing more frequent support are better suited for our High School Program that allows and requires more frequent attendance to produce desired results. We also help with school homework and test prep. Groups of 2-3 students in the same course, who can commit to the same schedule can take advantage of discounted pricing. Single session and discounted block sessions available.

Do you offer SAT/ACT/TSI prep?

Yes, for the math component of these exams. We have a comprehensive program that is designed to begin 2-3 months prior to the test date. Students are assessed for current skills, and a customized program is developed. Students work 1:1 with an assigned instructor. Groups of 2-3 students, who can commit to the same schedule can take advantage of discounted pricing.

How do I get started?

Call us to schedule and assessment, or if you have additional questions, a consultation. Your child will take both a written and oral assessment so that we can get a deep understanding of not only what they know, but how they think!

We sit down with them, put them at ease, and give them an assessment that doesn't feel too easy or too hard. Most importantly, we find out HOW THEY LEARN! Then we build their trust by giving them a few ideas and strategies that they can use immediately. We use the results to build a customized learning plan that targets skill gaps and quickly shows them success. In many cases “success” in math is something they have been craving!
