Bertrand Arthur William Russell was a British philosopher, logician, mathematician, historian, writer, social critic, political activist and Nobel laureate. He was born on 18 May 1872, at Ravenscroft, TrellechMonmouthshire, into an influential and liberal family of the British aristocracy

He is widely held to be one of the 20th century's premier logiciansHis work has had a considerable influence on mathematics, logicset theorylinguisticsartificial intelligencecognitive sciencecomputer science (see type theory and type system), and philosophy, especially the philosophy of languageepistemology, and metaphysicsIn 1903 he published The Principles of Mathematics, a work on foundations of mathematics. It advanced a thesis of logicism, that mathematics and logic are one and the same. In 1950 Russell was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature "in recognition of his varied and significant writings in which he champions humanitarian ideals and freedom of thought".
