Let's learn a bit more about what a Comprehensive Assessment at Mathnasium of Spokane North looks like.

Q: What is a comprehensive assessment?

A: A comprehensive assessment is a short problem sheet packet given to students before their first session to gauge the student's strengths and weaknesses. We use this test to get to know the student a little more, make a connection with them, and gauge the type of material that we should provide them for future sessions. We love to help them out and show them some tricks that will help them get through the packet!

Q: What things do you learn about a student when they take a comprehensive assessment?

A: When a student takes a comprehensive assessment, it allows us to learn so many things about the student's personality as well as their strengths and weaknesses. We get results back for specific categories of math skills based on how they did and from there, we can make specific learning plans that dial in exactly what the student needs a little more work on, in the future!

Q: What is a customized learning plan?

A: A customized learning plan is created from the initial assessment given prior to the first session. The customized learning plan focuses on the areas that the student hasn't mastered yet and needs a little more practice. Even if a student has the slightest misunderstanding on a topic, we make sure to include it in their learning plan to ensure that they have a solid understanding of each mathematical stepping stone before they move on to a more advanced topic. The customized learning plan meets a student where they are and is perfect for helping them grow their understanding in math!

Q: How do you gauge progress?

A: Gauging progress is one of the most important thing we do here at Mathnasium. It is important to us that our students are always being challenged, and moving onward and upward. This is our goal but we also don't want to move on from a topic before they truly understand it. We can gauge the mastery of skills by doing fluency checks with the students individually which are oral assessments led by lead instructors. These fluency checks measure a student's speed with which they answer, as well as, rate their ability level within that skill. We only move on to the next skill once we believe they have mastered it!
