Jan 13, 2023 | Spokane South

Today you’ll get a glimpse into the happenings of your local center as we follow students through their first experience at Mathnasium of Spokane South.

Q: What is the first thing a brand new student does at your center?

A: We strive to create a welcoming and positive environment for all of our students. From the moment they walk through the door, our friendly team will greet them with a smile and a warm welcome. They'll be greeted by quiet study music and the sight of other students hard at work with their instructors. Brand new students often gravitate towards our rewards displayed around the center! From our prize wheel and plinko board to our other fun incentives, there is something for every kid at Mathnasium of Spokane South.

Once your student is settled in, we get started on their free, no-obligation first assessment!

Q: What is the comprehensive assessment? How long does it take to finish?

A: Our free, no-obligation first assessments are designed to give us a thorough understanding of your child's math abilities and identify any areas that need improvement. These assessments typically take about an hour, and are a great opportunity for you and your child to get a feel for our learning center and meet our friendly team of math experts. We have a library of comprehensive assessments to pinpoint your child's specific strengths and weaknesses, and this allows us to create a customized learning plan that is tailored just for your child. We believe that every student is unique and deserves a learning plan that is suited just right to them. During the assessment, your student sits right next to our management team for the entirety of their assessment. We know math can be intimidating, and it’s one of our biggest missions to make them feel comfortable. When the assessment is complete, each student receives a small reward as a thank-you for their hard work, and a member of our management team goes over the detailed results chart and custom learning plan with their guardian.

Q: How often should I bring my student to Mathnasium of Spokane South?

A: As often as your schedule allows! Our flexible scheduling allows students and families from all walks of life to come in at their convenience. Aiming for 2-3 sessions per week is ideal for steady improvement, but you can come in as often as 5 days a week. For added flexibility, we also offer online sessions so that your child can learn from anywhere.

Our program is centered around small-group tutoring, so your student is face-to-face with an instructor at a table of up to four students, working on either their custom learning binder or their homework (yes, we do homework help!). Our small group tutoring format allows students to receive individualized attention and support from their instructor. They can ask questions and receive immediate feedback, which helps them to understand and retain the material more effectively. Our instructors are skilled at differentiating instruction and adapting to the needs of each student in the group, ensuring that every child is able to learn and grow at their own pace.

In addition to our small group tutoring, we also offer one-on-one sessions for students who need more personalized attention and support. One-on-one sessions are particularly helpful for students who are struggling with more challenging homework or who have specific learning challenges. During these sessions, your child will work one-on-one with an instructor who can focus solely on their needs and help them to understand and retain the material more effectively.

Q: Who are the people teaching my child?

A: At Mathnasium of Spokane South, we are proud to have a team of friendly and qualified instructors who are dedicated to helping your child succeed in math. Most of our instructors are college students pursuing math and education degrees at institutions such as Gonzaga University, Whitworth University, Eastern Washington University, and other colleges as far as Vanderbilt University! To ensure that our instructors are up to the task, we require all of our instructors to pass a math test before they are hired. This test covers a wide range of math concepts and skills, and it is designed to assess an instructor's knowledge and ability to teach math.

Our instructors are patient, understanding, and always willing to go the extra mile to help your child understand and retain the material. They understand that math can be challenging, and they are committed to finding creative and effective ways to teach the concepts. Whether your child is a math beginner or an advanced learner, our instructors have the skills and knowledge to support their growth and success.

The majority of our team has spent several years working together. Some might say we’ve become so close we’re like family - or, in some cases, we ARE family! We’ve had several instructors love their work so much they eventually bring on their younger siblings or other family members. Our favorite, however, is when former students come back as instructors and get to share all of their newfound love for math with our students! Take a peek at Our Team on our website to read about each instructor.

Q: When can I bring my child into Mathnasium of Spokane South?

A: Mathnasium of Spokane South is here to support your child's math learning needs all year round! During the school year, our hours are Monday through Thursday from 2pm-7pm and Fridays 2pm-6pm. We understand that schedules can be hectic, which is why we offer a range of evening hours to fit your needs. But we don't just stop there - during the summer months, we shift to a more convenient schedule to accommodate your family's vacation plans. Our summer hours are 10am-3pm on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and 12pm-5pm on Tuesday and Thursday. We are closed on the weekend so that our instructors can have a well-deserved break!

At Mathnasium of Spokane South, we offer one-hour sessions that are scheduled in advance and very flexible. This allows you to plan ahead and find a time that works best for you and your family. Our goal is to make math learning as convenient and stress-free as possible for you and your child.

Q: How do you motivate your students at Mathnasium of Spokane South?

A: It’s one of our top priorities to make MATH FUN! We believe that rewards and incentives play an important role in motivating and encouraging our students to succeed in math. We have a rewards cabinet, a prize wheel, a plinko board, a mystery box… A little something for everyone. Our points system using ""stars"" allows students to earn rewards by doing math, homework, and scoring well on tests in school. We also have a center-wide marble jar where we keep track of how well the entire center is doing. When we reach certain milestones, we celebrate with center-wide events such as popcorn parties. These celebrations help to create a sense of community and foster a positive learning environment.

In addition to our rewards and incentives, we also recognize and honor the hard work of our students in other ways. We vote and celebrate a student of the month every month, and we display the accomplishments of other students on our brag board. We stay in close contact with school teachers to monitor each child's progress in school and reward them accordingly.

Of course, while these tangible rewards are certainly fun, the real reward of our program is the confidence and success that our students experience in math. We regularly hear from parents that their child's attitude towards math has drastically improved as a result of attending our learning center. This improved attitude extends beyond just math - many of our students report feeling more confident and successful in school and other areas of their lives as well.

This transformation is truly the best part of our program. We are dedicated to helping every student succeed and build a strong foundation in math. By fostering a positive learning environment and providing support and encouragement, we help our students develop the skills and confidence they need to thrive in math and beyond.
