My child already excels in math.  Will Mathnasium address their needs?

Absolutely.  Since Mathnasium is customized for each student, we can help advanced students progress by introducing them to more challenging math topics and giving them more depth into areas they’ve already worked on.  More importantly, we can also help your child to develop even stronger numeric fluency and critical thinking skills, which are essential for continued success in math.

Why do children struggle with math?

If you have ever watched a foreign movie without subtitles, you can begin to understand how confused and frustrated your child may feel in math class. They just may not understand the language!  If your child is missing key foundational math skills, this is exactly how they feel in math class!

In school, kids are treated the same because it’s the most efficient way for teachers to cover vast amounts of material in a short period of time. Plus, teachers are expected to prepare the kids for state standards test on top of that. If your child doesn't get a chance to master a skill for whatever reason –  there is no time to give the necessary time and attention that they need. Teachers must move quickly to stay “on schedule". As a result, we see too many kids fall behind in math. They can stay after school for math tutoring, but this is ofter taught the same way. If the kids didn’t learn it in class – many don’t benefit from the in school math tutor.

What happens next?

The class moves on! Here come multiplication facts, adding and subtracting fractions, percentages, decimals, mixed numbers, exponents, ratios, x=?, divisibility rules, algebra, geometry, equations. Math is always building on itself and never slows down so your child can catch up! This can leave them to feel overwhelmed, embarrassed, and all alone! It’s tragic if they begin to expect and accept failure as their "new normal" and think "I'm just not good in math!". The moment they lose confidence in themselves, you typically see all of their other grades begin to suffer.

Think about this the next time you have to fight with them to do their math homework! With many kids, it is easier for them to fight you and not do the work than to put the effort into it only to see failure again. It’s a painful cycle but we can help end it for good.

Will a private one-on-one tutor work?

Unfortunately, in most cases a private math tutoring is only a temporary fix for a long term problem. Private math tutors only help children "survive" tonight's homework, but they don't address underlying foundational issues. Private tutoring is expensive and is not going to be a meaningful long term solution that your child deserves so there is little value in it.

How is Mathnasium different?

Great Question! The very first thing we do is give your child a skills

assessment. It is both a written and oral assessment so that we can get a deep understanding of not only what they know, but how they think!

We sit down with them, put them at ease, and give them an assessment that doesn't feel too easy or too hard. Most importantly, we find out HOW THEY LEARN! Then we build their trust by giving them a few ideas and strategies that they can use immediately. We use the results to build a customized learning plan that targets skill gaps and quickly shows them success. In many cases “success” in math is something they have been craving!

Does Mathnasium Really Work?

Yes! Quite well.

Parents roll their eyes when I tell them about how kids work at Mathnasium because they think of the Math help they got back in school… So I’ll just say - don't take our word for it -

Read our Parent Reviews

We get 100's of reviews that are glowing about how struggling students come alive after at Mathnasium. Their grades increase and their confidence skyrockets! Read what your neighbors have to say about us.

Why is confidence in math important?

It's not just important, It's critical! Kids need to see that they can do problem solve so that they can feel confident! This fresh, new confidence will spill over to many other areas of your child's life. At this point you will start to see peace at home! You’ll have less fights with them to do math homework. Not only will they have the confidence and the skills to attack it but they'll start bringing home better grades from school. We can speak with 100% certainty because we’ve seen with hundreds of our students!

Are you doing one-on-one tutoring?

Our Math Instructors are not average. We have brilliant, engaging, inspiring math experts that work one on one with your child to make sure they understands what to do and how to get started. Then the instructors step back and lets your child work independently. This gives them the time to process this new information without the pressure and stress of being watched. It also prevents a "learned helplessness" where the student feels that they need the instructor sitting in front of them all the time in order to be successful.  [We can't be there for their math tests!]

Our instructors quickly return after a minute or two to make sure they are doing the problems correctly, give them encouragement, and praise them for their efforts! If the student needs more math help we simply teach the lesson again in a different way without judgment or ridicule until they "get it". This helps your child to become a "confident, independent learner."
