Video: Mathnasium of Tallahassee Shares Tips to Help Children Learn Multiplication Facts
Jul 9, 2020 | Tallahassee
For young elementary school students, a big step in their math progression will be learning how to multiply.
Students can learn to master their multiplication facts utilizing many different approaches. Rote memorization. Skip counting. Multiplication arrays. Each child is unique. Thus, the most meaningful and impactful teaching techniques to help a child achieve automaticity in multiplication will vary.
How do you know your child is ready for multiplication?
Children who have successfully mastered their numerical fluency skills have the foundation necessary to begin multiplication. However, those who may have challenges with their times tables struggle with addition skills. Often, there is an over reliance on finger counting or challenges with adding single digits numbers with sums over ten.
When children begin to learn to multiply, many parents will immediately jump to different drills in hopes of achieving rote memorization of facts. As their learning path progresses, these drills do have their place in the process. But they are not the first step.
At Mathnasium of Tallahassee, we utilize many techniques that parents can also do at home to help children find success in learning to multiply. In this edition of our Number Sense video series, we explore the visual techniques, modeling options and practice tools that can be used to assist in multiplication learning. Plus, there are many toys, including Legos, and other items, such as coins, that can be used to help illustrate multiplying.
A child may be introduced to multiplication early in their elementary school learning, but truly mastering it a necessity for concepts and classes to come. From fractions to algebra to geometry and beyond, without multiplication fact fluency future math success will be difficult to achieve.
For older students, who may still struggle with multiplying, it’s never too late to review and build their skills, revisiting gaps and filling holes in their math learning foundation.
Learning to multiply does not need to be stressful or tedious. With the right tools and proper teaching techniques for your child, it can be a fun, engaging, and confidence building academic experience.
