Here are the answers to the math questions on our Tasty Math Lesson Postcard. We hope you had some fun with this!

Q: How many ounces are in a whole cup? How many in 2 cups?

A: 8 ounces in a whole cup, 16 ounces in two cups. Doubling numbers is a very useful skill.

Q: What is the ratio of butter to chocolate in this recipe?

A: The ratio is 4:2 or 2:1. A ratio is a comparison of numbers by division, or how many times bigger or smaller one number is compared to another.

Q: How much does 1 cup of sugar weigh?

A: Surprisingly perhaps, NOT 8 ounces. One cup of granulated sugar weighs about 7 ounces!

Q: How many eggs are a dozen dozen?

A: 12 x 12 or 144 eggs! This is called a Gross!

Q: How many teaspoons make one cup?

A: 6 teaspoons, 8 times (one time for each ounce in a cup) is 48 teaspoons.

Q: What is the ratio of sugar to flour in this recipe?

A: 4:3 or 4 parts sugar to 3 parts flour.

Finally, If you double the recipe you will not need a 16 x 16 inch pan. You will only need a 16 x 8 in pan, to have the same thickness of brownies. A 16 x 16 pan is 4 times the volume of a 8 x 8 in pan for the same thickness so it will make the brownies too thin.
