Mathnasium Student Spotlight: Meet Alex

Mar 16, 2018 | West Lexington

“It’s hard to watch your child struggle in math, it’s even harder when you don’t know how far behind they really are,” Melissa said of her son, Alex.

Alex was in 6th grade and not able to keep up in his math class, he would do extra credit homework that would give him enough points to be at a passing level for the class, but something was missing. His teacher spoke with his parents about Mathnasium and that it could really help Alex learn the basics that he was missing, fractions, percentages and decimals.
Melissa was skeptical to come to Mathnasium, Alex didn’t want to spend his free time relearning 5th grade math. But, he felt so defeated and he would stare at ‘fun homework’ sheets for more than an hour. He couldn’t relax during swim practice to actually be present and enjoy his favorite team sport. So, he entered Mathnasium in the spring for his free math assessment.

The math assessment starts verbally: asking questions, listening to concerns and then the students take a math test which shows a clear photo of where the student’s math skills are struggling and excelling. Alex had high scores in some areas and he had low scores in decimals, fractions and percentages – just the things that he was struggling with at school.
Alex told me that at first he didn’t want to go, he didn’t want to do math work but then, “something clicked, the strategies that they taught me over the summer allowed me to enter 7th grade with more confidence. Their math actually makes sense to me and I do the problems using the Mathnasium way to see how my teacher got her answers.”

“He is a totally different kid, he is confident, he is relaxed, we don’t see all of that frustration anymore,” his mother said. “I was skeptical of tutoring help for Alex, but this place (Mathnasium) is priceless. They gave him so much confidence just by showing him a new way to think about math and it works.”
Tim Scifres, owner of Mathnasium of West Lexington, said, “This isn’t a crutch for students, it’s a toolbox of strategies that fill some of the holes for both struggling and excelling students.”

Alex told me that he loves being able to complete his math homework quickly and correctly, he has more free time now and he’s glad that his parents took him to Mathnasium of West Lexington for help. “I didn’t want to come at first, but I made a lot of friends and it helped me to become better at math, I see why it’s important to speak up and tell people that you need help. And, I’m glad to have a lot of free time again since I’m not struggling with my homework. I have straight A’s in math!”
