The Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) is an annual statewide testing system that measures how well students acquire the skills and knowledge described in the Missouri Learning Standards (MLS).
The MAP evaluates students in:
English language arts (ELA) for grades 3-8
Mathematics for grades 3-8
Science for grades 5 and 8
The MAP also includes End-of-Course (EOC) assessments for high school students, which cover:
Algebra 1: Required if taken before high school
Algebra 2: Required for accountability if Algebra I is completed prior to high school
English II: Assessing advanced writing and literature skills
Biology: Evaluating understanding of biological concepts
Government: Testing knowledge of U.S. government and civics
MAP results help schools, families, and educators understand whether students are meeting grade-level expectations and where additional support may be helpful going forward.
Students take the MAP grade-level math test in grades 3 through 8. High school students enrolled in Algebra 1 or Algebra 2 may also take the corresponding MAP End-of-Course assessments.
Students in grades 3 through 8 take the MAP math test each spring. Districts schedule their own specific testing days within the state's testing window, so exact dates can vary by school.
We recommend checking your school's calendar as testing approaches and starting math tutoring early enough to allow your student time to build skills steadily, without last-minute pressure.
MAP Math is aligned to the Missouri Learning Standards, so the content reflects what students are expected to know and be able to do at their specific grade level. Depending on the grade, topics can include:
Number sense and operations (including fractions and decimals)
Ratios, rates, and proportional reasoning
Expressions, equations, and algebraic thinking
Geometry and measurement
Data analysis, statistics, and probability
For EOC assessments, students can expect course-level content, including linear equations, functions, and systems in Algebra I, and polynomial, exponential, and rational relationships in Algebra II.
Students also need to be ready for multi-step problems that ask them to apply and explain their thinking, not just recall facts or follow familiar procedures.
Mathnasium learning centers in Missouri can cover every topic a student may encounter on the MAP math test. We start with a diagnostic assessment to understand where your child is right now, then our tutors follow a personalized learning plan that targets the specific skills they need most and builds toward grade-level confidence step by step.
MAP Math results are reported using scale scores and performance levels. Scale scores vary by grade level. Students also receive a performance level: Below Basic, Basic, Proficient, or Advanced, which helps explain what the score means in terms of grade-level mastery.
The skill-area breakdown on score reports is often the most useful piece for families, as it shows where a student is strong and where targeted support could make a meaningful difference.
MAP scores are essential for understanding students' progress and mastery of Missouri’s educational standards. In Missouri, MAP scores, including math scores, may impact:
Progress evaluation: Scores help gauge how well students are meeting the Missouri Learning Standards (MLS) and show their advancement toward mastering key skills.
Identifying needs: Scores also highlight individual strengths and areas for improvement, offering personalized and guided support to help students succeed.
Accountability: MAP scores contribute to evaluating school and district performance, playing a role in state and national accountability measures.
Overall achievement: Scores provide a comprehensive view of academic achievement across different levels, student, class, school, district, and state, helping to assess the quality of education in Missouri.
Mathnasium’s MAP test tutoring focuses on the math concepts students will encounter on the MAP test.
We use a proprietary teaching approach called the Mathnasium Method™ designed to help students excel at math. Using our approach, Mathnasium tutors work with students to bridge their knowledge gaps and add new concepts in sequence, helping them truly understand and master MAP math and build the skills they will need to score well on the exam.
As many as 90% of students have reported improved academic performance after enrolling at Mathnasium.
Mathnasium’s MAP math tutors use the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach designed to help students truly understand and enjoy math. The Mathnasium Method™ fosters math mastery by:
Using personalized learning plans: Using assessment-based insights, we create personalized learning plans that will put each student on the best path to math mastery.
Building on existing knowledge: Our tutors start with what the student already knows to help them bridge their knowledge gaps and develop solid foundations for math mastery. Adding new concepts in sequence, we work with students to increase their knowledge level by level while enhancing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Teaching for understanding: We teach math in a way that makes sense to the student, employing a range of mental, visual, verbal, tactile, and written techniques to help them master any math concept.
When students feel behind, it is usually because a few missing skills are making grade-level questions feel harder than they should. At Mathnasium, we start by finding out exactly where those gaps are.
Every student begins with a diagnostic assessment. From there, our tutors follow a personalized learning plan that:
Rebuilds missing foundational skills step by step
Strengthens grade-level understanding aligned to the Missouri Learning Standards
Builds confidence with the kinds of multi-step problems students will see on MAP
Our goal is to help students truly understand how math works, so they can approach the test with real confidence, not just familiarity with the format.
Math test anxiety is common, and it usually comes from uncertainty about what to do next or worry about getting stuck. At Mathnasium, we address both the skill gaps and the confidence gaps that drive that feeling.
We help anxious test-takers by:
Filling knowledge gaps so the test feels more manageable
Practicing MAP-style problems in a calm, supportive setting
Teaching simple strategies for starting tough problems, organizing work, and checking answers
Building familiarity with common question formats so fewer problems feel surprising on test day
With consistent sessions and face-to-face guidance in a caring and fun environment, students start to feel calmer and more confident as the testing window approaches.
No, there isn’t. Students who choose to attend Mathnasium online will receive the same quality of live, face-to-face instruction and even work with the same tutors they would meet at their local learning center. The same personalized learning plan guides progress in either setting.
To start their Mathnasium journey, students take part in a diagnostic assessment which allows us to identify their knowledge gaps and strengths.
We use assessment-based insights to develop a personalized learning plan that will set your student on the path to achieving their academic goals.
Typically, we recommend 2 to 3 sixty-minute sessions per week. However, our tutors may suggest a different frequency of sessions based on each student’s specific goals and needs.
We recommend starting the MAP math tutoring early to allow your student enough time to learn and master the math concepts they'll face on the test.
Getting started with the MAP math tutoring at Mathnasium is as easy as one-two-three:
Find a location. Contact your nearest learning center, even if your student will be learning online.
Schedule an assessment. Our diagnostic skills assessment helps us create a customized learning plan for your student.
Book your sessions. Your local Center Director can guide you and your student in setting up a tutoring schedule.

Our daughter really enjoys her sessions. The playful approach to learning has really given her a good foundation in math.
I have two boys with different math aptitudes and learning styles. I never expected to find a place that could accommodate both of their needs.
My daughter does NOT like math at all, but she is perfectly happy going to Mathnasium. She comes out of her sessions feeling proud and accomplished.
