Five Movies (or Books) to Encourage a Love of Math
Feb 24, 2019
Enjoying movies together is a favorite family activity, and if those movies incorporate math in an interesting and engaging way, all the better! To inspire a math student in your family, we recommend the following movies based on true stories and that feature math and/or mathematicians.
Note: The first three movies are rated PG and the last two are rated PG-13. We encourage you to use your own judgement about what movies are appropriate for your family. Common Sense Media offers free information about specific, age-appropriate topics in any movie.
You may also enjoy the associated books as a good family read aloud.
Hidden Figures(PG) Based on the book by Margot Lee Shetterly, this movie tells the story of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson. They were African-American women working at NASA as “computers” in the South during the 1940’s. They worked hard to break glass ceilings to achieve positions in white, male-dominated math fields. We recommend this film to everyone, especially girls and minorities.
Stand and Deliver (PG) Based on the career of Jaime Escalante, this movie tells the story of a math teacher in a rough part of East Los Angeles in the 1980s. Mr. Escalante changed the course of students’ perceptions about math and themselves. The students, many of whom were previously failing math, worked to beat all the odds. They studied hard, took the Advanced Placement calculus exam, and did so well that some people accused them of cheating. This movie exemplifies how much can be achieved with grit, a growth mindset and excellent instruction. We recommend this movie for middle school students and high school students who say they aren’t good at math or who dislike math. A book based on the movie was written by Nicholas Edwards, Ramon Menendez, and Tom Musca.
October Sky (PG) Based on the story of Homer Hickman, a boy is inspired by the first satellite, Sputnik, to use math and science as his ticket to a better life. Thanks to a wonderful teacher and dogged determination, he and his friends qualified for the 1960 National Science Fair. We recommend this movie for children who don’t see math and science as cool or fun. A memoir written by Homer Hickman, titled Rocket Boys, inspired the movie.
Moneyball (PG-13) Based on the book by Michael Lewis, Moneyball shows the creative ways math solves real problems. It details how major league baseball general manager Billy Beane used statistical analysis and economics to bring his underdog (and underfunded) team to the playoffs, revolutionizing the baseball business. We recommend this movie for middle school students and high school students who don’t see math as useful.
The Theory of Everything(PG-13) Stephen Hawking, the famous cosmologist, persisted with his life and with math-based, scientific research despite the debilitating disease, ALS. This movie tells the story of his personal and professional triumphs during his physical decline. He lived five decades beyond the typical life expectancy of someone with ALS. We recommend this movie for middle school students and high school students who love math and science. The film is based on a 2007 memoir by Hawking’s first wife titled, Traveling to Infinity: My Life With Stephen.
For kids who already love math, these movies will become instant favorites. For kids who are still on the fence, math movies can be just the inspiration they need to see how cool and useful math can be!
My girls love everything about mathnesium. From Peter, the instructors to the entire ambiance! Even in lockdown, with math online, they still find it fun and worth logging into... thank you Peter. Thank you Mathnesium.
Mathnasium is the only math program that my daughter enjoys going to! Before starting the program at Mathnasium my daughter struggled with math. My daughter has now been going to Mathnasium on and off for about 2 years. I am so happy with the results of this program because now my daughter is an A+ student in math and she made it into Geometry Honors!! Thank you Mathnasium for giving my daughter the confidence to succeed in math!
I had a great experience with Mathnasium. The staff was very helpful and always available to answer. The scheduling of the class was very easy, my son could schedule his classes by himself. The location was very convenient.
My 9 year old is gaining a lot of confidence in Math now. The tutors working with him are very competent and focused on seeing him achieve his weekly goals. My son enjoys his time here every week and I’m most happy about that.
My child had a great experience in Mathnasium. The staff in New Hyde Park are also nice and easy to deal with. My child is going back for more sessions. You won’t regret including Mathnasium in raising your smart kids too. - mom of 2 kids.
If your child is experiencing some difficulties understanding various mathematical curriculums.. Then go nowhere else! My daughter was struggling mightily and we could not help her because solving math problems today is so different and more difficult than it was for us. So, a phone call was made and here we are two years later and my daughter is getting test grades in the upper 80’s and low 90’s... It is well worth the price of seeing my kid not fall behind and feeling great about herself! Peter and Mitchell are a pleasure to work with and truly monitor your kids progress. I highly recommend Mathnasium!
My daughter has been coming to Mathnasium for two years and she gained confidence in her math skills. Thanks to Mathnasium my daughter has been successful in keeping up with her Regents exam grades and advanced level classes each year! Thanks very much Mathnasium tutors!!
Thank you for your kind words. We are very happy that we were able to help your son.

My son was failing high school algebra and through Mathnasium he made tremendous improvement. Initially, he gave me a hard time about coming but towards the end of the year he looked forward to going. He ended up not failing the class! Cannot say enough good things about the program or staff at New Hyde Park location. Highly recommend Mathnasium to anyone whose child is struggling.
(3rd grade) My child has been going to the New Hyde Park location for 1 month so far. Already her level of confidence has increased and she went from her last Math test grade of a 50, to now a 93! I’m so happy, but more importantly she’s starting to actually like math!!!!
My son has just completed his first month at Mathnasium. His math grade has noticeably improved and just as importantly, his confidence has grown immensely.
All the staff at Mathnasium of New Hyde Park are knowledgeable, helpful, friendly and have a knack at getting kids motivated to tackle any math problem.
This is Amanda’s 5th month in this program! I can’t thank this program enough! Amanda’s test grades have gone up a whole 15 points since starting this program. I wish I had learned about this program earlier! Thank you so much for exceeding my expectations!
Sabrina has been enrolled in Mathnasium for the last couple of years. She looks forward to her sessions and we see not only improvement in the subject but she feels more confident as well.
Mark as well as all of the tutors are great and she enjoys working with them.
Thank you so much for your feedback. We pride ourselves on our ability to motivate children to learn math in a fun way. We are so happy that Sabrina enjoys coming and is more confident.

My daughter's experience with Mathnasium has been great. She went from a C student to an A by the end of the school year and her confidence in math improved. She looks forward to attending her sessions and doesn't put off her math homework anymore. I have recommended Mathnasium to other parents and will continue to endorse this program.

This is my second time using mathnasium for my daughter. I am very pleased with the results; the teachers are very knowledgeable and patient. On both occasions, my daughter was able to better grasp the material. She went on to pass her regents and do well on her college entrance exam. in my opinion, instruction and practice = better grades.
Mathnasium has been a tremendous help to building my knowledge, skills, and confidence in Math. Every time she attends a mathnasium session, she feels prepared and stronger in the concepts. She studies for tests with them, they help her with homework, and practice many different areas. She really likes the instructors and they way they teach. She has gone ffrom getting 60's and 70's to above 90's in Math since we started 2 years ago.
I love how motivated my son is about comming in to mathnasium. Learning, and especially tutoring outside of school has to start with motivation, and enthusasim. I love how my son looks forward towards the tutoing session.
Rukshana has a much better experience in the past month. She will continue through March. We are anxiously awaiting her math test results to see how she is progressing. She said she had an 86 on her last test and feels more confident. Thank you.
Thank you for revising your initial review. We strive to ensure that any problems are addressed immediately and do anything we can to help the children learn. Please let us know if there is anything else we can do to help. Thank you.

You provide a safe and pleasant environment. Which keeps my son happy to be there. Thanks
After a few week of attending, my granddaughter now appears more comfortable doing her math assignments and asking for help from the instructors. Her confidence level is higher now. I feel that it is only a matter of time before she starts getting 4's on her school math exams.
Two of my children go to Mathnasium. The teachers are very helpful and work with the children to help them understand what they are working on in school. They also will help them strengthen and review math facts. I am very happy with Mathnasium!
My son Leonardo was lucky enough to be one of the first students in the New Hyde Park Mathnasium when it first opened in our area. As a teacher, and as a parent, I knew how important and beneficial it would be to have a place like this available for our children. Leonardo always loved math, but having mathnasium as an extracurricular activity, helped him strengthen his skills. Peter and his staff are very professional and friendly. The overall environment and attention is priceless. Whether your child is struggling, or just needs guidance and refreshers in math, THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO! I highly recommend this place to my friends, family, and colleagues.
We found MathNasium literally by accident one day and I made a joke to my 8th grade daughter...Hey look at that..a Math Learning Center..maybe they can help you!! My kids questioned what I was doing when we got out of the car to go inside. I want to find out information, I told my kids. Well, it's been many months and my son attended also for a short time. Peter is incredibly patient, and we have been so fortunate to have them help my daughter! Her grade improved from a 65 to a 78 after 1 Marking Period! She wouldn't have been able to do that without Peter and his amazing staff, especially Marc! Thank you for everything! Paige Reale
Janasia loves working with Mark and Dean! She has started to really understand Geometry's proofs and gets the way they break it down... She even started to gain confidenance in answering questions in front of the class, something she hated before Mathnasium. Janasia also taught her math teacher and classmates the short cut Dean taught her.... Thanks so much Peter, Mark and Dean!!!!
My daughter is in 8th grade and got her 1st ever 65 in the 1st Marking Period in Math. Her test scores were low and her confidence shattered. After 3 MathNasium visits, her test scores rose 50 points! She has gained more confidence and is passing now!My son also attends and even though he is great at Math, he earned a 96 on his first test after two sessions! His teacher has seen a marked improvement in his work! The Center provides fun incentives for the students to work for. It has been an amazing experience so far for my children and I, and I am confident their grades will continue to soar with MathNasium's help! - Paige Reale
My daughter has been at Mathnasium for only one month. Her confidence in Math has gotten so much better. She looks forward to going twice a week. I was told to give it a few months & in only a month I see improvement! Thanks for all the great instructors! I am looking forward to continuing the journey in math at mathnasium!!!
My daughter enjoys learning math that she can feel more confident mastering and solving! She looks forward to working with the tutors and receiving incentives as she gains more knowledge of specific content areas. She feels less anxious about Math and likes that she can review skills before a test or get help with homework if needed!
Thank you so much. We are so glad that she is gaining confidence and doing better!

Mathnasium is responsible for getting Maggie through high school math. There is always someone ready to help her even when we call at the last minute. Peter is kind and helpful and a pleasure to deal with and always happy to accommodate his students. I would (and have) recommend Mathnasium of New Hyde Park to anyone whose child needs extra help with Math.
Thank you so much for your kind words. We are so happy that we could help Maggie successfully get through her math courses!

My daughter was a junior in high school and struggling with Algebra II. She likes math but it was never a top subject for her. Well, the team went directly to the root of my daughter's issues with math- an assessment test showed what to address- so, right from the beginning of her sessions at Mathnasium NHP the learning was substantial. She ended the semester with an A and her scores on both the SAT and ACT for math improved substantially. Thank you everyone- great job! Now for Pre-Calc-- signing up again! :)
