Teacher Appreciation Week 2022

May 3, 2022 | Mechanicsville

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 2nd - 6th this year!

Teacher Appreciation Week (the first full week in May) is a time to honor teachers and recognize the lasting contributions they make to our lives. Here at Mathnasium, we champion that cause and we want to send our local teachers all of the appreciation they can stand!

We work alongside your students’ teachers throughout the year to fill in gaps and provide support for your students where it’s needed. We’re always amazed by the resourcefulness we see from teachers as they go above and beyond to engage with all of their students!

We’ll be celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week at Mathnasium by decorating Teacher Appreciation cards, sharing stories about our favorite teachers, and working with our local schools to provide some gift baskets and other treats to the teachers who have gone above and beyond this year. And you can help!

Decorate a Teacher Appreciation Card

Everybody enjoys hearing that they’re appreciated, and a card or a note is a great way to share your appreciation so that it can be revisited and remembered throughout the year. Mathnasium students are able to decorate a Teacher Appreciation Card during their visit, or you can print this one out and decorate it at home!

Learn More About Our Favorite Teachers

My favorite teacher, amongst many, was probably my third grade teacher, Mr. Ronald Crouse. He was a lanky, bespectacled guy, and it was his first year teaching after previously having been a paramedic. Even as a student, it was pretty easy to tell that he worked hard to make the class as engaging as possible. He challenged the class, while also teaching us practical life skills.

One of those life skills revolved around his reward system for behavior called "Crouse Cash". Each Friday, we would take some time at the end of the day, and he would bring out a cart full of candy, small toys, and called us up by table groups to either spend what we had earned, or deposit what we earned into the "bank". We were required to keep and balance our "check book", and to keep track of our available money, working on our addition and subtraction skills, as well as goal setting.

Those who saved their money could participate in an auction at the end of each nine weeks for larger prizes. Having been a teacher myself, I am quite familiar with the type of items that he got as rewards, but I have even more appreciation for the personal cost to him of keeping this reward system going.

While most students spent their cash as soon as possible, my best friend and I started a friendly competition to see who could end the year with the most cash saved. The competition became the topic of conversation during many lunches, and really gave something unique, as a class, that brought us together. I didn't experience that all too often, so I know that it was a special kind of year.

At the end of the final nine weeks, my friend and I had several bidding wars over some of the auction items, and both made out quite well, to end the year on a high note. For the record, I ended the year with the most money, but only by $20. This is only one of many of the memories that have stuck with me, through the years.
His dedication to not only teaching the class, but also all the extra help he provided to those who struggled inside of the classroom and out, and his creativity and positive attitude, were some of the attributes that led me to want to become an educator in the first place, and for that, I owe him a debt of gratitude.

My favorite teacher of all time was Ms. Castle, she taught the sixth grade at Harding Elementary School in Erie PA. I had just moved from a military base in North Carolina and this was my first civilian school I had ever attended. I was a new and extremely shy. She took time with me each day to discuss my favorite topics; books I loved, favorite movies, she really brought me out of my shell and I will never forget her kindness!
