Our Team

Our specially trained math instructors will teach your child how to understand math in an individual setting; our unique approach enables us to explain concepts really well and lend a helping hand to every student. Our tutors foster a caring, encouraging environment that helps kids thrive and learn! Read below to learn more about our talented team:

Patrick Mosman, Center Director

Patrick is a Richmond native, attending school at Collegiate before heading to college at James Madison University where he studied Media Arts and Design. He was drawn to work for Mathnasium because he wanted to help kids succeed both inside and outside of the classroom. Patrick started out as Assistant Center Director at our Tuckahoe and Mechanicsville locations, then went on to work as Assistant Center Director at our Short Pump location before taking on this new role at Mechanicsville. When not at work, Patrick can be found rock climbing, playing guitar, playing video games, or riding his motorcycle around town!

Brendan Dresdner, Education Coordinator

Brendan moved to Richmond to study Computer Science and Urban Planning at Virginia Commonwealth University. When he first started teaching (piano) in 10th grade, he didn’t think he was going to enjoy working with children, but soon realized that he was wrong! From piano, Brendan branched out into tutoring core subjects such as English and Math. During his time in grade school, Brendan didn’t have a great time learning math and wished it could be taught in a different way. He says, “Mathnasium has proven to be the different, better, way that I’d been looking for! We can provide the strong foundation that students need in order to really enjoy the experience of cracking a difficult math problem--and it feels great to know that you can make a real positive difference in someone’s life!” Outside of Mathnasium, Brendan enjoys playing a variety of musical instruments. Piano is his main instrument, but he sometimes also plays the pipe organ, guitar, drums, and funny little instruments like the accordion and otamatone!

Jim Burns, District Manager

Jim grew up in Elmsford, New York and went to the University of Dayton where he studied Business and Marketing. We’re excited to take advantage of his experience coaching, mentoring, and developing front line leaders to enhance our own team! Jim was drawn to Mathnasium by our ability to enrich and positively impact kids. When not working, Jim enjoys cooking, reading, spending time with his family and following his life long favorite baseball team, the NY Yankees.

Nicki Atwood, COO, Owner

Nicki hails from Baltimore and studied Physics and Chemistry at University of Richmond. While working with students in college, she noticed that many times students are held back because of a gap in their educational foundation and that drew her to Mathnasium’s unique approach. When not at Mathnasium, Nicki loves to visit different cities and hang out with her cat. In fact, she loves pets of all shapes and sizes, and has had many different types of pets, including a dog, a mouse, a rabbit, and even a hedgehog!

OwnerJames Temple, Owner

James developed a passion for and proficiency with Mathematics during his middle and high school years. In 2000, James graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in Mathematics and a love for solving all types of problems. He took those skills into the United States Air Force where he served for 7 years as an aircraft maintenance officer. It was during these years that James had the opportunity to tutor home schooled children and really started to appreciate the frustration that many kids feel towards Mathematics. James left the Air Force in 2007 to go back to the University of Virginia where he received his Master's of Business Administration degree from the Darden School of Business.

OwnerJoAnn Temple, Owner

JoAnn became interested in the education of children while raising her four sons and assisting them with their homework. She obtained a degree in early childhood education while simultaneously working at an early intervention and rehab facility, which served children with special needs. There she was given many opportunities in varying positions within the agency. During this time she gained valuable knowledge and experience focusing on the development of young children. In more recent years she worked in an early childhood special education program and was also a substitute teacher in the public school system. Through these experiences she gained first hand knowledge of how frustrating it can be for teachers to try to meet the needs of all their students with limited resources and other constraints. Mathnasium represents an opportunity for James and JoAnn, as a mother and son team, to combine their complimentary experiences, education and fundamental values to help children of all skill levels realize their full potential in Mathematics and beyond.

Teaching math is not just what we do, it's all we do.
