Student Spotlight: Meet Ava and Ari

Jun 14, 2018

Ava and Ari are brother and sister and they have been coming to Mathnasium of West Lexington for almost a year to focus on the math foundations that they weren’t quite getting the hang of in school. Ava told me that she was becoming so frustrated with math, that it really wasn’t her ‘thing’ and she was scared that it was going to affect her GPA. That’s when she and Ari went to another tutoring center for help but it was quite different from Mathnasium of West Lexington, “I felt like I couldn’t ask any questions so I would just sit for like 20 minutes until someone noticed that I was finished with the worksheet,” Ari told me.
“It was so silent in there, and you had to kind of teach yourself plus take home worksheets to complete before the next tutoring session,” Ava said. Ava was getting frustrated again and then they left the other tutoring center and that’s when they found Mathnasium of West Lexington. “At first, I thought it was going to be the same as the other place but just focused on math. I was surprised when I walked in and they had instructors sitting with students and they were laughing and doing math. I felt really comfortable,” Ava said.
“At Mathnasium of West Lexington we focus on the math needs of each specific child, and that starts with our FREE math assessment. After the assessment we move into the teaching the foundations where the students are struggling and give them the tools to work through their homework and Mathnasium curriculum,” Tim Scifres, owner Mathnasium of West Lexington.
Ari loves patterns and fractions and his face lit up when he told me that he was going to be in the high school pre-engineering program next fall. I asked him why he was coming to Mathnasium of West Lexington and he said, “I want to work ahead and really focus on the math that I like and be challenged. I want to know the foundations so I don’t get behind.” Ava and Ari are planning to come to Mathnasium of West Lexington over the summer because they want to focus on the core math for the grades that they are entering and don’t want to lose all of the progress that they have made working at their own levels of math.
Ava loves to write in her free time and is a member of several groups such as the Academic Team, Spanish Honor Society and Creative Writing. Ari enjoys playing video games and getting together with friends to play role playing games.
“We have students of so many levels at Mathnasium of West Lexington and we love watching them grow into confident students. It’s not always that they don’t get it (math), they just need to see the problems in a different way and have access to the one on one help that we offer to everyone,” Tim said.
Mathnasium of West Lexington offers a FREE assessment to every child and you can schedule an assessment by calling 859.219.0001.
