New Year, New Math Resolutions

Since the New Year has approached, it’s time to start making new resolutions to help your students expand their mathematical knowledge. There are many different ways to help your child’s math skills:

Making sure that students are staying on track with their schoolwork is also crucial. Making sure your child has an assignment notebook or list can help not only your child organize their school work, but also give you an insight on what they are working on completing. When students have an upcoming test, it’s also important to make sure they are studying and reviewing math material. Bringing your student into Mathnasium to check, review, and study their homework will also help students strengthen their math abilities.

Incorporating math around the house can also help students skills outside of school and into their daily life. Some examples of this could be counting/measuring ingredients, counting change, identifying different shapes around the house, or comparing prices. Playing math related games can also be helpful. Money games like Monopoly and The Game of Life are also great games to help students learn how to count money. Chess, Connect Four, Four Way, Yahtzee, and many other games that can help students with math skills, too.

Helping your child realize that they have many people supporting them and many tools to help them become more successful at math will help your child boost their confidence. Avoiding their negative thoughts and setting them up for success to work past their struggles can be useful to help students work past their anxiety. Having a conversation with your child about prioritizing what math tasks they need to get done can also be helpful when your child is busy with school work and athletics and club activities.
