How to Conquer Finals Week

Jan 11, 2020 | Mira Mesa & Scripps Ranch
Finals can be a stressful time of the school year if a student does not feel confident or prepared.

Mathnasium of Mira Mesa / Scripps Ranch wants to make this time of the year easier with some tips on how to survive finals week

1. Find out the dates.
For our Poway Unified School District students; finals will be held on Thursday, January 16th and Friday, January 17th. For our San Diego Unified School District Students; finals are being help Wednesday, January 22nd through Friday, January 24th, 2020.

2. Make a list of topics that you will need to know.
Did your teacher give you a study guide? If a study guide is provided by your teacher, this is the best tool to use while studying since they have already previewed the final exam. If your teacher didn't provide a study guide, your textbook will be a primary source in identifying the concepts required to know.

3. Bring that list of topics into the center.
Here at Mathnasium of Mira Mesa / Scripps Ranch, we primarily focus on individualizing a student's education with their academic goal in mind. Bring the list of required topics into the center and we will create a customized learning plan to conquer finals.

4. Remove all distractions from your study time.
We are all guilty of checking our social media throughout the day or staying up late to play the last round of your favorite video game. This is the most vital time to remove any distractions while studying so that you're able to more easily focus.

5. Study over time instead of cramming.
Research shows that studying gradually over time proves to be the most sufficient form of studying. Cramming doesn't work due to lack of retention. We recommend 2-3 days of studying per week to allow yourself to reinforce the concepts learned throughout the week. Plan your study schedule weeks leading up to finals to prevent cramming.

6. Take healthy measures to feel prepared.
We have all heard it before: get a good nights rest and eat a healthy breakfast. Plan on sleeping 7-8 hours the night before the exam so you are not tired the day of your test.  You want to go into finals feeling like you are at your full potential to excel. If you feel good, you will do good.

7. Go into your final exam feeling prepared.
Before you go to school the day of the exam, double check that you have everything you will need.  Ensure you have any materials you are allowed to use during the exam (index card, cheat sheet, etc.). Bring plenty of pencils, erasers, and scratch paper for your convenience.

8. Ace finals!
If you have implemented these tips, worked hard, and had the support of Mathnasium; the last thing you need to do is ace those final exams!
