What Common Core Pathways Exist?

Do the words "Common Core math" cause your family stress? Did you know there are different pathways for Common Core?

When Common Core was introduced in 2014 to San Diego Unified School District, math pathways at middle schools and high schools needed to be revised to match the new State Standards. This has resulted in guardians hearing lots of "you're not teaching me how we are doing it at school" since the methods and approach have been altered from the traditional math we all learned.

So what is the Common Core Pathway? This pathway consists of tests at specific grade levels to ensure they are on the correct path for long-term success. The first test is the "Middle School Placement Exam" that is administered to all 5th graders to determine if they will enter 6th grade on an accelrated math pathway or stay on the traditional path.

Students are retested again in 6th grade and at the end of 8th grade to ensure they are keeping up the accelarated pathway or if they need to be switched into accelarated if the traditional pathway isn't challenging their skills enough.

The results of the 8th grade assessment determines the high school pathway for your child. The advanced pathway for high school results in a total of 5 AP Math courses for your student to use for college and university credit and less math courses they will have to take in their adult years!

The math pathways vary for each individual student and can be confusing to navigate -- that's why we're here to help!
