Growth Mindset VS Fixed Mindset
Aug 9, 2021
In November of 2014, the world got a real treat. Carol Dweck was featured on TED talks and gave an eye-opening lecture about something we hadn't heard of yet.... she called it a "Growth Mindset".
8 years and nearly 13,000,000 views later, Carol's research about "Growth Mindset" is still a hot topic in education and psychology. So what is a growth mindset?
Here's the definition: “In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.” - Carol Dweck
In contrast, we give you the fixed mindset: “In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success—without effort.” - Carol Dweck
Maybe your son or daughter feels like they just aren't "a math person." Maybe they feel like math is "too hard for them to understand." (These are examples of a fixed mindset- and they can be really hurtful to a student's success.)
At Mathnasium of Mukilteo, we understand that how we interact with our students directly affects their learning. Mathnasium loves to cultivate growth mindsets for our students by encouraging them to try, struggle, get help as needed, try some more, and eventually master concepts. This proves to a student that even though learning math might be hard for them, the process is worthwhile and yields rewards.
Mathnasium of Mukilteo is helping young math students all over Mukilteo, Everett shift their mindset to experience growth.
