According to Education Week, “education leaders are already bracing for a worse ‘Summer Slide’ this year for students whose schools were shut down to curb the spread of coronavirus.  But new research suggests the so-called coronavirus or ‘COVID Slide’ is going to be significantly worse.”

During the summer, students who do not practice their math skills can lose as much as three months of learning or more with the schools’ shut down. With the added effect of Covid-19, this loss can be as much as a FULL YEAR!

This not only hurts the student's retention of the material learned during the previous school year but can make it much harder for them to stay at the right pace during the next school year.  This summer learning loss can also have long-lasting effects, including lower test scores, lower self-confidence, and a lower chance of success in high school and college.

STAAR Test to Resume in 2020-2021 School Year

While Texas public school districts finalize their plans for a return to the classroom, but they know the state will resume its high-stakes standardized testing for millions of students.

Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath told the state Board of Education on Tuesday that the annual State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, also known as STAAR, will return in the 2020-21 school year.
