How can I get help with my math homework?

Dec 4, 2023 | Northborough

Students of all levels and abilities ask this question every day.  Students look for help at home from family members, through afterschool programs, online tutoring, and more.  Quick fixes are easy to find – but what if your child needs more than a quick fix?

When a student needs just a little help with a particular topic or assignment, free online tutoring can work well.  Be careful though – there are services that will do the entire homework assignment for you, for a price!  The danger of any online tutoring service is that short-term focus on just getting through today’s assignment, which doesn’t help many students in the long run.  Better services work with the student to truly help with understanding the underlying math, but this is difficult to accomplish in an on-demand online setting.

Children struggling with their math homework are highly likely to be missing key foundational math skills, making it difficult to keep up in class.  On top of that, teachers are required to cover vast amounts of material in a short period of time. If your child doesn't get a chance to master a skill, it may just be “too bad."  The class must move on to stay on schedule.  As a result, we see too many kids fall behind in math.

They lose all confidence in themselves and their grades begin to suffer.

If a student is missing key foundational math skills, it makes it very difficult to keep up in class. They feel confused and frustrated. Is it any wonder there is a fight to do homework? For many, it's easier to fight and not do the work than to put in the effort, only to see failure.

Is there something that helps right away?

Although looking at the long-term needs of the student is critical, getting help on today’s homework or preparing for this week’s test are high priorities for both students and their parents.  Mathnasium helps students with their homework during every workout session, so that they stay up to speed with their current class.  Not only that, we coordinate with their teachers so that we have a strong understanding of how to help each student as they work through their individual customized learning plan.  And because there is no take-home work with Mathnasium, we are relieving some of the stress and anxiety that students and parents might feel with other programs that layer on even more work at home.

So what really works in the long run?

It may sound incredible, but even advanced and honors students can struggle with math concepts that they learned many years ago.  This makes it difficult to keep up the pace in more advanced classes, especially in high school.  It’s vital for any student to stay strong in their math skills, especially mental math, because that kind of numerical fluency really helps with test taking and keeping up in other classes, such as science.

Mathnasium has a unique way of supporting each student with exactly what they need.  It starts with the customized learning plan, which ensures that each student is working on exactly what they need to improve.  Their Mathnasium workouts are just right – not too hard, not too easy.  With Mathnasium, students avoid frustration and overload.  Over time, students gain confidence, stay motivated, and enjoy learning and attending their workouts at Mathnasium.
