Alexander Dargel, Center Director
Alex and his wife, Jennifer, own and operate the Mathnasium of North Charlotte. Prior to opening his Mathnasium center, Alex worked at a variety of companies including a large manufacturer, one of the largest banks in the country as well as small IT startups. During his time at those companies, he specialized in data analysis and marketing. He has a B.S. in Marketing and MBA from Oral Roberts University. Alex grew up in Germany before he came to America for college thanks to a tennis scholarship. Alex always enjoyed math from a young age on and it helped him succeed in college as well as in his professional career. Now he is committed to bringing the Mathnasium Method to the children in this community. Married with 2 kids, Alex also serves at his local church, Hope Church Charlotte and still enjoys playing tennis.
As an independent math tutor, Lauren has worked with students of all ages and math abilities for the past four years. She attended Mallard Creek High School in Charlotte, NC for two years before she decided to finish her last two years of high school at the North Carolina School of Science and Math in Durham, NC. While she was there, she became really interested in biomedical engineering, which is why she decided to take an engineering research course during her junior year. Lauren now is a sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she is majoring in biomedical engineering as a Chancellor’s Science Scholar. In her free time, she enjoys exercising, watching movies, and hanging out with her friends.
Leroy was born in Washington DC and raised in eastern North Carolina. He attended UNC Greensboro where he received a bachelor's degree in mathematics with a focus on secondary teaching. While Leroy was in college, he worked for the math department tutoring students and assisting the professor. Since then, Leroy has taught and tutored middle and high school students. Leroy currently teaches Math I here in Charlotte.
Fun Fact: Leroy has studied abroad in Spain and has done some missions work in Ecuador.
John Mark, Instructor
Tias has graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in December of 2017 with a degree in Statistics, Politics and Public Policy. She fell in love with teaching when she started working with refugee youth in Pittsburgh, PA and is especially passionate about sharing her interest in math with other students. Tias was born in India and raised in N.C. She is excited to be back working with students from her hometown at Mathnasium. During the summer of 2018, she will begin her first full-time teaching job with Teach for America. Outside the classroom, Tias loves doing arts and crafts, baking, yoga, and rewatching The Office and friends on Netflix.
Fun Fact: Tias was a figure skater growing up and still obsessively keeps up with competitive figure skating.
Audrey was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, and is currently a senior at Hickory Grove Christian School. She has attended the North Carolina Governor's School for Math and plans to pursue engineering in college. Before working at Mathnasium, she taught swim lessons and was a volunteer at Discovery Place. She also volunteers as a counselor at Camp Joy and the North Carolina School for the Deaf every summer. Audrey has one brother, one sister, and one dog named Buddy whom she loves a lot.
Fun Fact: Audrey is president and founder of the American Sign Language Club at her school. She also played the piano for 10 years, has read every Harry Potter book and seen every movie.
Robert was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. He attended the University of Toledo in which he double majored in Applied Mathematics and Communication. During his time in college, Robert was elected as The Black Student Union President for two years, in which the organization was able to raise over $10,000 in scholarships. Robert is also currently a Second Lieutenant in the Army National Guard, as well as a high school math teacher here in Charlotte.
Fun Fact: Robert lived in Germany for three years as a child.
Venky was raised in the greater Charlotte area and attends Cox Mill High School. He is the president/founder of Science Olympiad, president of Math Club, and organizes events at his school. Outside of school, he is a youth soccer referee for Odell Rec. Sports. Also, he enjoys working with and teaching children. His passion for math led him to dual-enroll in math classes at UNC Charlotte. In college, he hopes to pursue an engineering degree.
Fun Fact: Venky enjoys modern hip-hop and rap and prefers movies over books.
Taylor loves music, dogs and of course, math. In recent years he has traveled in and out of the country for music while also teaching high school math here in Charlotte. This city has been his home since the 5th grade. He graduated with a degree in math from UNCC in 2011.
Fun Fact: His favorite past time activity is to binge on Netflix.
Marissa has lived in Charlotte, North Carolina her whole life. She is currently attending Rowan-Cabarrus Community College and working towards her Associate of Science degree. After next year she plans to transfer to UNCC to pursue a major in Mathematics of Middle Grades Education. Marissa has two siblings and enjoys working with younger students as she currently babysits and tutors.
Fun Fact: Marissa is a black belt in Taekwon Do and currently teaches classes during the week.
