Have you ever wondered what goes on inside Mathnasium of Okemos?

Jan 13, 2023 | Okemos

Today you’ll get a glimpse into the happenings of your local center as we follow students through their first experience at Mathnasium of Okemos.

Q: What is the first thing a brand new student does at your center?

A: A lot of times, families will opt to start their Mathnasium journeys with a free trial session. We provide some sample curriculum, opportunites to interact with our excellent instructors, and a taste of what makes Mathnasium so much fun! After trial sessions, families often tell us that their students begged them to sign up!

Q: What is the comprehensive assessment? How long does it take to finish?

A: Our diagnostic math skills assessment is the perfect way for families to get a clear picture of where their students' math skills are now. We spend about an hour and a half on both the verbal and written assessments, then take the time to provide families with on-the-spot results, and a summary of what we see. The assessment also provides us with the critical information needed to develop a customized learning plan for the student.

Q: How often should I bring my student to Mathnasium of Okemos?

A: Twice-per-week attendance is strongly recommended (and required by average), although we have options for more frequent attendance models.

Q: Who are the people teaching my child?

A: Our instructors are math experts! We hire people with excellent math-focused CVs, and who demonstrate passions both for the subject of math, but also for teaching others. While our current team is relatively new to Mathnasium (on average), they have all been thoroughly trained specifically on teaching with the Mathnasium method and curriculum.

Q: When can I bring my child into Mathnasium of Okemos?

A: Any time that's convenient for you! We offer drop-in sessions for all of our memberships, meaning that within our open hours, your enrolled students can attend a session, no appointment needed. Our instruction hours are offered M-Th (3-8pm), and Sa (10am-2pm).

Q: How do you motivate your students at Mathnasium of Okemos?

A: In every way we can! There are plenty of every-day small things, like the positive attitude and reinforcing encouragement of our instructors, to bigger things like our reward cabinet where students can save up the fruits of their labors to ""buy"" anything from small pieces of candy to iPads and Playstations. We also add monthly themes on top of all that, in which students can compete or challenge themselves with goals and prizes.
