Ailene Shan, Center Director
Ailene received her degree in Accounting and Hospitality Business from Michigan State University and has worked at various corporate firms including KPMG and BP America. Ailene knows from her own personal experience that the joy of learning is in the understanding and the value of knowledge is in its application. While taking a step back from her professional career, she engages her children with activities that involved math concepts in their everyday life; cultivating and nurturing their love for math. Ailene understands that kids learn in a variety of ways and believes that the Mathnasium method of teaching can change a child’s attitude towards math. She hopes to help kids develop their minds and have fun working out their math muscles. Ailene also looks forward to teaching students the importance of strong study skills, which will serve them in subjects beyond math as they make their way through high school and on to college.
Kin Chan, Instructor
Kin comes with more than 25 years of combined industry experience in business management, accounting, auditing and consulting, information technology and education. He has a BS in Accounting from Rutgers University and a MS in E-Commerce Technology from DePaul University. Kin believes that math not only builds logical, critical thinking and problem solving skills. Addtionally, having a good foundation in math also builds confidence and allows students more options, and broader opportunities to achieve their maximum potential in life. Since Mathnasium allows kids to learn math in a unique and fun way, it’s a perfect match for success.
Omaris a junior at Carl Sandburg Hugh School taking AP Calculus BC and other AP classes. As an active member of her school community, Omar particiates in clubs like Med Central Medical Journal, Chicago Youth Science Journal, Model UN, Youth and Government and Mu Alpha Theta. Outside of school, Omar enjoys playing soccer and volunteering at the Orland Park Prayer Center. He enjoys both studying and applying math concepts and strives to help others become just as passionate about math!
Arushi Sharma, Instructor
Arushi is a junior at Carl Sandburg High School on advanced track taking many AP classes including AP Calculus BC. She is the President for her school Environmental Club and also actively involved in Debate, Mu Alpha Theta and Medical Club (HOSA). Arushi is very passionate about environmental issues and has involved in many meaningful activities and projects. She has over 150 hours giving back to nature centers and making positive differences in the community and environment. Arushi loves Mathnasium’s positive environment and looks forward to helping students build their confidence.
Thomas is a junior at Carl Sandburg High School currently taking AP Calculus BC and other AP classes. His passion lies in the STEM field and is making a difference through his active participation in Mathletes and ACES clubs. Thomas also holds an executive position with the robotics team and is part of National Honors Society and Mu Alpha Theta. He loves nature and working with children and often spends his time outside of school volunteering at nature centers and running children's programs at his church. Thomas's favorite subject is math, and he looks forward to sharing his love of math with the students at Mathnasium!
Chloe is a senior at Carl Sandburg High School currently honors math and AP classes. She loves everything about math and music related, paeticipating in Sandburg's philharmonic orchestra. Chloe is skilled in cello and piano and also takes part in the Sandburg tennis team. She has over 100 volunteer hours working with children in art programs. Chloe loves being outdoor, taking hikes and enjoys outdoor activities, rain or shine. She loves applying math to everyday life and finding new and creative ways to teach math!
Yasmeen is a college student at Illinois Institute of Technology majoring in biomedical engineering and minoring in computer science. She is a student leader at her college involving in clubs like the Biomedical Engineering Society, Women in STEM, UNICEF and the Muslim Student Association. Yasmeen has taken advanced level math courses throughout high school and continues to do so in college. She is also passionate about making a difference in the community and has volunteered in several community impact projects such as the Aspen Young Leaders Fellowship and also the ComEd Create a Spark program. Yasmeen is excited to help Mathnasium students become more confidence in their math skills.
