Reopening of Schools: Here's What You Need to Know

Jul 8, 2020 | Lake Nona

The Orange County Public School Board held a work session to assess reopening of school options yesterday.

In response to Richard Corcoran’s, the Florida Commissioner of Education, emergency order to reopen all schools in fall, the school board met for over 10 hours and outlined three learning options.

While the plan has not been approved by the board, here are the options you and your family will have:

Face-to-Face

Students who want to return to classrooms and directly interact with their teachers and classmates must wear masks, get daily temperature checks and practice social distancing. The board discussed maximizing distance in classrooms where feasible by removing excess furniture, lowering class sizes, and staying six feet apart. Although the school’s standard hours will remain the same, the board is also considering staggering the bell schedule to allow time for sanitation and hand washing.

To help close the learning gap and reduce the Summer Slide, Mathnasium offers face-to-face sessions and personalized learning plans. We require students to wear masks and carefully follow CDC guidelines to provide a safe learning environment for your child to soar ahead in math.

Virtual

Families who do not wish to return to school campuses will have the option to enroll in Orange County Virtual School. Students can enroll for a minimum of one semester and will have a self-paced learning experience. Students do not need to follow the same schedule as face-to-face students and will receive credit by course completion. They will have access to some web conference meetings, as needed.

For families who want the flexibility of learning from home, our new and proven Mathnasium@Home platform allows students to receive the same one-on-one instructor interface with Mathnasium materials as they would receive in the center. Students can work from the comfort of their home, while preparing for the upcoming school year.

OCPSLaunchED@Home

This option is for families who would like to maintain their connection to their school, but don’t yet feel comfortable sending their children back on campus. Similar to Orange County Virtual School, students who enroll in this program must commit for a minimum of one semester, but will be able to transition back to school when possible. Students will follow the traditional school schedule and will be able to connect with their teacher through a web conference in real time.

Mathnasium@Home also allows for students to get face-to-face instruction in real time, with the option of returning to the center -- whenever your family is ready.

The school board will take public comment on the reopening plan on Tuesday, July 14. For more information, please visit the OCPS board’s official website or visit their YouTube channel.
