Our Team

Our specially trained math instructors will teach your child how to understand math in an individual setting; our unique approach enables us to explain concepts really well and lend a helping hand to every student. Our tutors foster a caring, encouraging environment that helps kids thrive and learn! Read below to learn more about our talented team:

 

Center DirectorKarina Durand, Owner and Center Director 

Karina is the Center Director at the Mathnasium of Palm Harbor. Prior to working at Mathnasium, she worked as an SAT/ACT instructor for Kaplan Test Prep in both class and one-on-one settings. She has also engaged in both face-to-face and social media marketing for different organizations. She studied psychology at Florida International University and focused on adolescence. She has had a passion for education from an early age which led her to graduate high school summa cum laude earning the International Baccalaureate diploma as well as the Superintendent’s Diploma of Distinction.

Karina's psychology and education backgrounds have led her to understand the importance of fostering a positive and nurturing environment for the students and instructors. Her goal is for students to interact with mathematical concepts in a way that is exciting yet familiar so they enjoy the process of learning. Her energetic personality and devotion to academics allow her to engage with students, parents, and fellow educators in the Palm Harbor community.

  • Hobbies: Painting, reading, and traveling 
  • Fun Fact: Karina has been to 10 countries, 12 states, and has been paddle-boarding, white-water rafting, waterfall rappelling, canopying/zip-lining, horseback riding, snorkeling, swimming with dolphins, whale-watching, and surfing.

 The Mathnasium of Palm Harbor Instructor Team

The Mathnasium of Palm Harbor math instructor team is passionate about math education and math tutoring.  Our passion to inspire children, fused with our knowledge of math, creates extraordinary experiences for our students. We make math make sense.  We make math fun!

The process to become a member of the Mathnasium of Palm Harbor instructor team includes:
  • All of our math instructors go through an extensive interview process which includes an evaluation of their ability to work with students.  It's one thing to be knowledgeable in math, but we ensure our instructors have the ability to breakdown and teach math to students in elementary, middle, and high school. 

  • After successfully completing the interview, instructors must then pass a math test to validate their math resume.

  • Before officially being hired, Mathnasium of Palm Harbor instructors goes through a background check.

  • Upon joining the team, our math instructors go through an extensive training process that includes understanding the Mathnasium Method, best practices in math education, techniques for successful math tutoring, and proven strategies for working with students of different abilities to create a personalized math tutoring session.  Whether the student is advanced and gifted, on the level and needs help staying there, or needs help catching up, our instructors are trained to ensure children have a successful productive experience at Mathnasium of Palm Harbor.  

Our instructor team is made up of individuals who are currently studying at the University of South Florida, recent college graduates, and professionals who are seeking to share their love of math and spend time working with students at Mathnasium of Palm Harbor.  


Daniel Coe, Lead Instructor

Daniel is a Lead Instructor at Mathnasium. He joined the team in 2017 as an instructor. Daniel studied Mandarin at Sichuan International Studies University in Chongqing, China from 2015 to 2016. Daniel believes in learning for the pleasure of learning and has specific interests in both mathematics and language. He enjoys practicing metacognition and teaching students to also contemplate their own thought processes. Daniel understands that the way one practices mathematics differs from the way one teaches the subject thus he finds the Mathnasium Method to be a valuable tool for mathematical education.

 David Perlow, Lead Instructor

David is a Lead Instructor at Mathnasium. He has been a staff member of the Mathnasium of Palm Harbor center for 5 years. David has loved math from an early age and taught himself higher-level material. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics from the University of South Florida with a minor in music.  David loves to teach as much as he loves to learn and lives by the saying, "He who claims to know, knows nothing". David enjoys spending time at St. Petersburg College where he has developed personal relationships with some professors who allow him to sit in on their classes so he can further his education. 

 

  • Hobbies: Composing music (he is inspired by Chopin and Debussy) and watching TV

Alex Kovak, Instructor

Alex Kovak is an Instructor at Mathnasium. Originally from the Chicago area, Alex moved to Tampa Bay to attend the University of South Florida and major in Applied Mathematics. He worked as a data analyst for a cosmetic center for two years prior to coming to Mathnasium. Alex believes that numbers are around us everywhere we go and are therefore important to study as they can give us clues into the workings of the world. Alex loves that anyone can be capable of anything by applying themselves and believing in their abilities. After all, what you can accomplish with math is never-ending!
