SUMMER SLIDE

Apr 19, 2023 | Mullica Hill

As the temperatures rise and schools close their doors for summer break, many students and their families look forward to a few months of relaxation and fun. However, what many fail to realize is that the long break from academic studies can result in a phenomenon known as the "Summer Slide." This term refers to the loss of academic skills and knowledge that occurs when students take a break from their studies during the summer months. This can be particularly damaging in the area of math, where a solid foundation of skills and knowledge is essential for success in higher-level courses.

The Summer Slide in Math can have a significant impact on students, as research has shown that they can lose up to 2.5 months of math skills over the summer break. This can be particularly challenging for students who struggle with math or who are already behind in their studies. Without consistent practice and reinforcement, their skills may decline even further, making it harder for them to catch up with their peers. However, by encouraging students to continue practicing their math skills over the summer, we can help prevent the Summer Slide and ensure that students return to school in the fall with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed.

There are several strategies that can help prevent the Summer Slide in Math. One of the most effective is simply to encourage students to continue practicing their Math skills throughout the summer months. This can be done in a variety of engaging ways, here are just a few of our favorites:

· Games and Puzzles: From card and dice games to logic games to puzzles, games provide a variety of methods for reviewing grade-level content and skills!

· Everyday Activities: Parents can encourage their children to incorporate math into everyday activities, such as measuring ingredients when cooking or calculating the distance traveled during a family road trip.

· Gardening: Planting a garden doesn't just teach care and responsibility, but it also gives kids a lot of reasons to practice their math skills! How many square feet is the garden? How much fertilizer will it take to keep the flowers blooming?

· Baseball: Baseball is full of numbers and math! From a batter’s on-base percentage to a pitcher’s ERA, there are many natural opportunities to practice math during a baseball game. GO PHILLIES!

· Math Field Trips: Visit local museums, science centers, or other educational venues that incorporate math into their exhibits.

Another effective strategy is to enroll students in a summer math program or camp. These programs can provide students with the opportunity to continue learning and practicing math skills in a structured and supportive environment. They may also include hands-on activities and real-world applications of math, which can help students apply what they are learning in their daily life. Mathnasium of Mullica Hill offers several camps for students grades K-6 in areas such as STEM, financial literacy, and chess.

With the right strategies and support, it is possible to prevent the Summer Slide and ensure that students return to school in the fall with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed. By encouraging consistent practice, enrolling students in summer programs, and providing resources and encouragement, we can help give students the best possible chance for success in math and beyond.
