Fun Game Night at Scarborough Public Library!
Apr 26, 2019
Scarborough families got their game on with Mathnasium last week at the Scarborough Public Library. Mathnasium of Portland partnered with SPL to provide an evening of math and logic games as part of the library’s Stay-cation activities during April break. Students and families from Wentworth Intermediate School and the Scarborough Primary Schools were in attendance.
The puzzle table was busy as kids and parents used their spatial reasoning while working with Tangram and Kanoodle puzzles. Persistence was key as some participants lingered for most of the hour mulling over possible puzzle solutions.
For those looking for multiplayer games with a little more competition, a wide variety of options were available. Some games like Four Way Countdown and Mobi provided opportunities for practice with math facts and computation. Others like Connect Four, Blockus, and Chess asked players to use strategy and logic to think several steps ahead of their competitors.
Skyjo, a new card game in our repertoire, combined elements of chance, strategy, and addition/subtraction practice. Skyjo was a new favorite for many - luckily up to 8 players can play at a time!
Another card game, the ever popular Set, required the application of a logic rule to an array of cards - calling on visual perception skills. This was a quick parent favorite.
Whatever games or activities families chose, both fun and brain exercise were guaranteed! Special thanks to Scarborough Public Library, Louise Capizzo, the library’s youth services manager, and Celeste Shinay, the programming and development manager, for helping facilitate and host this event and to all the families who joined us for the fun. We’re hoping to be back at SPL for more fun over the summer!
