New Math Tutoring Center Opens In Port Washington

Mar 11, 2019 | Port Washington

Mathnasium of Port Washington is proud to announce its opening in the local community on March 11, 2019—in time for honing skills important for New York State math testing (May 1st – 3rd), end-of-year Regents review, and standardized SAT and ACT tests for high school students. The program’s focus is on year-round learning and understanding and building upon core math skills and concepts (versus formal test prep), and there is an opportunity for students to fill in any knowledge gaps and solidify their mastery of their math curriculum prior to testing and to boost their grades during the second semester and/or get ahead for their following school year. Mathnasium Port Washington takes up residence at 938 Port Washington Blvd, Port Washington, NY, adjacent to the Subway, and across from Paul D. Schreiber High School and Carrie Palmer Weber Middle School. A “Grand Opening Event” will occur later this month.

The Port Washington location adds to the more than two dozen Mathnasium centers across Long Island and the tri-state area and over 900 centers in North America. Mathnasium’s specialty is making math make sense. The program is designed for students in grades 1-12. Its focus is on both remediation and enrichment, providing an opportunity for each student to progress from his or her current level of understanding. After being given an oral and a written assessment which allows Mathnasium to form a three-dimensional picture of a student’s strengths and weaknesses, a customized program is assembled for each student that caters to individual learning styles. Unlike other tutoring centers which rely on take-home worksheets and computer instruction, Mathnasium’s instruction is delivered by trained and experienced tutors on the premises, using a combination of guided practice, manipulatives, and math games to engage students at every level.

“We’re excited to bring Mathnasium to Port Washington -- to my hometown” says Mathnasium co-owner Alan Flyer. “We’ve been looking for the right time and place to do this, and today is it!” Flyer is the owner of Mathnasium of Roslyn, which has been helping local students since it opened in 2011. “We’ve been serving the Port Washington community from our Roslyn location for over eight years, and now Port has a center of its own.” Flyer is a graduate of Schreiber High School in Port Washington, and resides in East Hills.

“I’m looking forward to being a part of the Port Washington community” says co-owner Suneet J. “It’s a great town with a vibrant community. Mathnasium of Port Washington hopes to be an integral part of that.” Suneet has over six years of experience working as senior instructor at Mathnasium of Roslyn, has been a high school math teacher for the past two years, and is currently working on a Master’s in Math Education at Columbia University.
