Our Team

Our specially trained math instructors will teach your child how to understand math in an individual setting; our unique approach enables us to explain concepts really well and lend a helping hand to every student. Our tutors foster a caring, encouraging environment that helps kids thrive and learn! Read below to learn more about our talented team:

Katrina Smith, Center Director

Katrina is the Center Director of Mathnasium of Myers Park and Mathnasium of Quail Hollow.  She graduated from UNC Chapel Hill's Kenan Flagler School of Business where she received a BS in Accounting and Marketing. In addition, she has an MBA certification from Georgia Tech's MBA Dupree School of Management. For more than 20 years Katrina progressed at AT&T excelling in multifaceted senior management and leadership roles in Training, Operations and Sales.  Katrina also served as Treasurer of the Charlotte District School PTA system representing over 110 schools. She has spent most of her adult life working with and developing youth in primary and secondary schools. From extracurricular activities to tutoring, her love of math and seeing the results of academic advancement in our youth makes Mathnasium a strategic fit.  Katrina is the proud mother of a Mathlete, Kendall Prescott.

Monica Palmer, Operating Partner

Monica earned a Bacholors of Science in Family Studies from The Ohio State University and a Master of Arts in Reading Education from Florida Gulf Coast University. Monica has the perspective of both a former classroom teacher and a parent. She wants to help students improve their skills and build confidence! Monica enjoys providing parents with support by teaching fundamentals of math in a way that makes sense and by helping students with homework. She also loves the idea of helping kids get ahead and stay ahead. Particularly those who were "bored" in math and need a greater challenge. Monica is grateful to be a part of all of the amazing success stories and is committed to helping all students in our local community improve and grow.

 

 

CenterDirectorTom S, Lead Instructor

Tom received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine with a major in Mathematics. Tom enjoyed a 25 year career as Vice President and Treasurer of United Dominion Industries, a diversified industrial products company headquartered in Charlotte, NC.  Tom and his wife Saundra own a glass design business located in Pineville, North Carolina.  Designer Glass Mosaics creates custom mosaic and fused glass art works for home and office décor.  Their clients are throughout the US and projects been featured on Extreme Makeover Home Edition, HGTV, Southern Living and numerous home décor magazines. Tom has always enjoyed math and teaching and looking forward to working with the kids at Mathnasium. Tom enjoys playing golf, travel and watching sports in his spare time.

Nicole G, Director of Curriculum

Nicole graduated from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania where she received    her  Bachelors of Science of Education degree in Secondary Education – Mathematics. She was an honored member of both the Phi Kappa Phi (International Collegiate Honor Society) and Kappa Delta Pi (International Honor Society in Education) fraternities and spent much of her time working in the tutoring center. Nicole used to instruct at the Mathnasium of Andorra (Philadelphia, PA) before moving to Charlotte in 2012 to work at Porter Ridge Middle School as a 7th Grade Math teacher. Her favorite part of working at the Mathnasium is helping students of all ages build a great foundation for learning through playing games and working with manipulatives. When she’s not teaching math, either at school or in the Mathnasium, Nicole can be found working out at her Crossfit Box, watching her favorite teams (Flyers, Eagles, and Phillies) on TV, or at home doing craft projects and solving Sudoku puzzles.

 

Erica W, Instructor

Erica started teaching in 2013 and am currently a high school math teacher at Providence High School. She loves to watch all sports, but her favorite is football. Her favorite teams are the Pittsburgh Steelers and Notre Dame Fighting Irish! Her favorite place to be is by the ocean and she enjoys reading books!

Janani S, Instructor

Janani is a rising junior at Charlotte Country Day School. She started at Mathnasium in February of 2020. Before joining here, she worked at Best Brains as a tutor and grader for around nine months during her freshman year. During her free time, she enjoys playing tennis and violin, listening to music, hanging out with friends, and watching TV. She is on the varsity tennis team at school and she also plays violin for the CCDS orchestra!

Matthew R, Instructor

Matthew started working at Mathnasium in the the summer of 2019. He is a rising senior at Charlotte Catholic High School, and participates on the Science Olympiad, Debate, and Tennis teams there.

Chiara S, Instructor

Chiara has been working at Mathnasium since August 2019 and am currently a senior at South Mecklenburg High School. When she was younger, she came to Mathnasium as a student working to sharpen her skills. A few years later, she knew that Mathnasium was the place she wanted to work. Outside of school and work, her hobbies mainly revolves around music. She is involved in several choral groups and have self taught myself the guitar and ukulele.
